Groundbreaking recording still in vogue.

This recording was groundbreaking when first published in 1975, especially with vocal contributions from countertenors Paul Esswood and Kevin Smith and delightful instrumental support from the three cornetti players led by Edward H. Tarr as well as the Hamburg Wind Ensemble. This CD only represents highlights from the original 2 x LP set of the full Vespers (which included both Magnificats) but adds 5 madrigals from 1973 that surely could have been omitted in favour of more from the complete work. Nevertheless, a little is better than nothing at all.
