Detective Montalbano: Episodes 23 & 24 [2 Discs] DVD Region 1, NTSC
31 Dec, 2015
An amazing series
The entire series of Detective (or Inspector) Montalbano is very well done. A marvelous ensemble cast is supplemented by individual other actors. Unlike in American television, a wide range of shapes, ages, and attractiveness shows up regularly -- these people look like people, rather than actors. The subtitles are well done. I understand that they were subtitled in Italy as well: the Sicilian dialect is apparently impenetrable to other Italians! One really can start anywhere in the series, if one wants, and these are two wonderful episodes.
The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki: Used

Atypical from a master
Miyazaki is brilliant. This is somewhat autobiographical and shows life in Japan before WWII; it is the least fantastical of all his movies. And this makes it very effective. It is very easy to get lost in his tales, and the soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi always helps. I prefer watching it subtitled rather than dubbed into English, but both work: the cadences of Japanese seem to fit the animation better, to me.

Quirky -- not for everyone, superb for many
The combination of wit and humor is uncommon on television. This has both, and absurdity as well. It is a show that is loved by some, hated by others -- I highly recommend watching an episode or two before buying it, as if you don't like it you will just plain hate it. Seth Green's deadpan delivery is marvelous, as always; Sarah Silverman has a great niche here; and the willingness to handle such issues as cross-dressing and inter-species romance is quite amazing. I'm glad to finally own a copy.
