Revolting Rhymes (Dahl Colour Illustrated), Dahl, Roald Book The Cheap Fast Free
    13 Apr, 2017
Fairy tales as only Roald Dahl can tell them
Roald Dahl gives his dark, somewhat cynical, but undeniably fun take on different fairy tales. 'Cinderella', 'The Three Little Pigs', 'Goldilocks', 'Little Red Riding Hood' and others are very far removed from the versions most people are accustomed to, but this is where the charm lies. All told in rhyme, there's a lot to delight older children and adults. This is basically Roald Dahl at the top of his game. Enjoy!
American Tabloid (Vintage), Ellroy, James Book
    13 Apr, 2017
Fun, hard-hitting, violent, well-told and perfectly plotted
James Ellroy blends fictional crime and historic political events to create an incredibly captivating story. It's told with such a lot of impact, detail and fun, that you accept the over-the-top violence and many of the events that would otherwise be a little too unrealistic. However, they are perfectly complemented by the writing style, the events of the story and the larger-than-life characters. Reading 'American Tabloid', you actually feel how enjoyable it is for the writer to create a world of corruption and crime, to tease the reputations of Howard Hawk and a few of the Kennedys and test the limits of his characters with the situations and events he forces them into. Recommended, especially to anyone who has enjoyed any of Ellroy's other novels, or those of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett or anyone looking for a novel that treads the line between pulp and capital-L literature.

Not to everyone's taste. Not like Catch-22, but still brilliant.
A more challenging, dark and troubling read from the author of Catch-22. It has moments of brilliance, a horrific conclusion and very disturbing subject matter. It isn't to everyone's taste and is about as far from Catch-22 as it could be, but as literature, it's definitely worth a few reads.
