Vixen astronomical telescope accessories eyepiece NPL series NPL40mm 39209- JP
05 Sep, 2017
Good value and quality
I purchased this because of Vixen's reputation for making quality gear. The 4.2 oz, 40mm focal length NPL is a Plossl made in China - 1.25" barrel, AFOV 40°. It is good so far for visuals on my 127mm refractor (826FL, f/6.5), 80mm refractor (400FL, f/5), and 114mm Newtonian reflector (500FL, f/4.4). It is supposed to work best in the 127mm refractor, and it does because the exit pupil and true field of view are appropriate (6.2mm and 1.94°, respecitvely). The visuals are still good in the other smaller telescopes, especially the 80mm wide-field refractor (8mm exit pupil, 4° TFOV). The views are clear and there is not much dimming or blur around the edges (it is a low-power eyepiece). While the optics are good, the housing is constructed of sturdy materials. About half of the housing is plastic, but not cheap at all. The twist-up eyecup is made of sturdy plastic as well. For the price I paid, it is very well-constructed. Make sure your telescope can maximize the exit pupil and magnification of this low-power eyepiece. Again, not a problem for my 127mm refractor, but the magnification is just at the lowest useful magnification of my 80mm refractor and 114mm Newtonian reflector. For exceptional wide-field views, you will need a low-power 2" eyepiece. The 1.25" eyepieces are good for locating objects, but not for rich-field viewing and that floating in space feel.

Not bad, and has features found on more expensive binoculars
Overall, I like these binoculars. I bought them for stargazing: to have a lower magnification pair to frame constellations in the field of view. My other binoculars are 10x50 and 15x70, so they magnify more but the field of view is narrower and the view is shakier. These 6.5x32 binoculars definitely provide the greater field of view with less shakiness due to the lower magnification. They are also much lighter, so my children (age 12 and 8 at the time of this writing) can use them with more ease than the heavier 10x50 and 15x70. The minimum focus distance is stated to be 15 feet, but it seems more like 25 to 30 feet. This won’t be a problem for me since I look at the stars, but might be for birdwatchers. I know these binoculars are known among birdwatchers, but I don’t intend to do any bird watching. In the daytime, The weather is sunny and warm and the skies are clear where I am right now. The views from one block away to the mountain ranges about 20 miles away are very good. The mountains (with some snow on them) look good and the view is pretty clear, though not very sharp (able to show smaller details). Last night, the binoculars did what I expected them to do. The night sky was transparent (able to see more stars) though the seeing (atmospheric stability) was predicted to be very bad. With smaller magnification, I am not concerned about seeing, so transparency (clarity) of the sky was more important for these binoculars. The Pleiades were much smaller and in the center of the field of view, and most of the Hyades fit in the field of view as well. I could also fit the belt of Orion and the sword in the same field of view and even make out the Orion nebula. I am overall very pleased with the performance of these binoculars for stargazing. The build quality is generally very good, especially for non-movable parts. It’s a solid and sturdy little pair of binoculars. The center focus wheel is smooth and the focus holds well once I set it. I read another review in which the reviewer said the focusing was stiff. I did not find this to be the case with the one I received. The right eye diopter also works well and holds focus. The twist-up eyecups work very well and do keep out some stray light from the sides (periphery). The build quality of some movable parts, however, could be improved. If my eye sockets or face pushes on the eyepieces while I am looking through the binoculars, I could move the eyepieces and defocus the binoculars. The eyepieces also wobble (see-saw left and right) if I push their outer edges down with some light pressure. The interpupillary distance (IPD) gauge is not set right and twists (see pictures). I turned it fully clockwise and it seemed to tighten, but is now not helpful for gauging the IPD. As for the accessories, I really, really like the padded strap, but I needed to use tweezers to push the strap ends into the eyelets at the sides of the binoculars (see picture). The soft case and lens caps are also very good additions. The binoculars are fully multi-coated to improve light gathering and control, and use the higher quality BAK-4 prisms instead of the BAK-7 prisms. Both of these features were important in my decision to purchase these binoculars. They are lightweight as well as water/fog-proof. I am pleased with this purchase, but highly suggest trying out these Kingbird 6.5x32 binoculars before purchasing them.

Best bargain for a portable DVD player
I have two: one for my daughter (pink) and one that I use to monitor video shoots. The picture quality is very good - it has one of the best resolutions in its class. The double remote sensor was genius especially due to the swivel function of the screen that allows a variety of viewing angles. The sound quality is very good and the volume is very good. Two headphone jacks are a plus - I was able to use the DVD player with a student of mine to help him practice listening while I monitored the movie we used as content (I'm an ESL instructor by trade). The only drawback is the input. There is only a 1/4" phone jack input that must use a cable that is wired correctly if one wants to use the component output of an HD camcorder (I use the Canon HV-30). Expect to be creative in your wiring options. Luckily for me, my camcorder has an output that I use with the Canon stock A/V cable and some parts from my local retail electronics chain-store. You can't lose with this DVD player.
