This is a very different role than what Maggie Smith normally plays...You'll like it.
The role of the "Lady in the Van" is a complete departure from the types of roles Maggie Smith normally takes. Instead of playing a haughty aristocrat, Dame Maggie plays a once talented concert pianist who is involved in a fatal car crash and ends up blaming herself for the death of the victim. The once talented musician falls apart and becomes homeless and takes up residence in a van on a homeowners' driveway in London. You will be surprised how Dame Maggie finds little humour in being a homeless character. BTW, the story is based on a true story. What a truly engaging, empathetic film.

Very engaging character study.
Queen Victoria is a very complex character in history, and Judi Dench captures her beautifully. Despite being the most powerful person of the period, she was essentially a lonely, depressed old woman in need of companionship.

Entertaining, historical biopic.
Wonderful, sympathetic biopic about a rarely-understood monarch.
