Salems Lot: The Mini-Series (DVD, 1999)

Salem's Lot DVD
I remember thinking David Soul was pretty lame when this came out. This many years later, I didn't let that influence me. Since it is a TV movie it is kind of tame. There are some truly creepy moments. There is also some really bad acting. Soul is kind of stiff. Hunter's attempt to create suspense comes off as drawn out sometimes. The townspeople vampires are much scarier than the main vampire. All in all it is a fun movie to watch though. The DVD picture quality is not bad. Since it is a TV movie, we get the full screen version. Unfortunately, there are no extras, other than the theatrical trailer for the international release. Audio is mono. I gave this 4 stars because of lack of any special features. If you are into that sort of thing, get the blu ray. It has audio commentary by Tobe Hunter. If you just want to watch the movie, this is a fine version.

Carrie (DVD, 2001, 25th Anniversary Special Edition)

Carrie Special Edition DVD
Well, we all know this version of Carrie is a classic horror film. This DVD has excellent picture quality compared to the original DVD release. Still, it's not perfect, but that is expected considering the original source material. The 5.1 Dolby Surround is the same as the original DVD release. The original mono movie soundtrack is an added feature. Unfortunately, there is no audio commentary. However, there are two excellent documentaries included. "Acting Carrie" deals with the cast. "Visualizing Carrie' deals with the production. There is also a nice behind the scenes photo gallery. "Stephen King and the Evolution of Carrie" is a good read as well. Rounding out the features is a short featurette of Carrie the Musical and the original theatrical trailer. There is also a small booklet with some notes on the film. Lots of good stuff for Stephen King fans. I highly recommend this version over the original DVD release.
The Shining (DVD, 2007, Special Edition) Jack Nicholson, Kubrick, Shelly Duval

Two Disc Special Edition
A film by my favorite filmmaker, based on a book by my favorite author, starring one of my favorite actors. That is what makes this one of my favorite films of all time. This is a great dvd. The picture is clear. They did a great job. This is the widescreen version, enhanced for widescreen TVs. That means you get a full picture, but without the black spaces above and below. The sound quality on this edition is superb. Disc 1 is the movie itself, and the theatrical trailer. There is also optional commentary by the guy who did most of the filming and a movie historian. great insight into Kubrick and the making of the film. Disc 2 contains 4 documentaries, including a "making of" doc shot by Kubrick's daughter Vivian. There is also an optional commentary in which she tells a few stories about the film. If you are a Kubrick fan, this is all great stuff. Unfortunately, there is nothing here for Stephen King fans. Even though this film is a masterpiece, King was unhappy with the changes made to the story. That's a shame because I think Kubrick captured the essence of the book even if he didn't follow it to the letter, so to speak.
