Exactly What A Live Rock Album Should Be!
As a rule I don’t like live rock albums. The atmosphere rarely comes across well, the acoustics are never up to scratch and the banter between numbers often falls flat. Live rock albums never live up to actually being there or listening to the studio versions. Well, when I say “never”, there are of course exceptions to the rule and One For The Road is just such an exception. In fact, I would go so far as to say this is an exceptional live album.
Recorded on the Kinks re-union tour back in the eighties, every song crackles with energy from the opening. After a fantastic rock ’n’ roll build up the fourth song is a great rendition of Lola much to the audience’s obvious appreciation. The pace doesn’t slacken through Pressure and into a blistering version of All Day And All Of The Night which provides some great audience participation. Every song is a winner though don’t expect to hear Waterloo Sunset, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion or Sunny Afternoon, but you won’t actually miss them as the concert was so good it didn’t need them. The Kinks’ glory days may have been behind them but this album shows the band re-united and on top of their game. The classic hits – Stop Your Sobbing, Till The End Of The Day, You Really Got Me, Victoria and David Watts – are done brilliantly, but for me the highlights come from the lesser known Low Budget, National Health, Prince Of The Punks and Superman.
When I first heard this album in the eighties it was my introduction to the Kinks – it blew me away - I’ve been a fan ever since. One For The Road is still a firm favourite and now it comes with a second disc full of extras! How can you go wrong? If only all live rock albums were this good.
