An Enduring Enigma
Almost a quarter of a century after it originally appeared, Twin Peaks continues to hold a unique place in the minds of many people (like me) who find the entire project endlessly fascinating. The TV series named the killer of Laura Palmer many episodes before it ended, and ratings flagged afterwards. The subsequent episodes included potential alien abduction; transvestite police agents; guess the father of the child; drugs; entrapment; everything. Ahead of its time doesn't begin to do David Lynch and his conspirators justice.
The only problem I had was Twin Peaks, the town. How did a place so obviously nice come to be the centre of such a massive amount of tragedy, deceit and lawbreaking? To a degree, Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me answers some (but not all) of these questions. It could happen anywhere I suppose, but it happened there.
The film is a prequel to the TV series, using the same actors, but released after the TV series aired. I would normally run a mile from such projects, but here the mystery and sheer strangeness of the TV series left me wanting more and the film is an excellent and exciting explanation of the whos, whats, hows and whys involved. Acting, direction, production are all great. I'm looking forwards to the new series!
