JBL 2600 - Excellent Stereo Speakers
I recently repaired and restored an old stereo receiver, which put me in the market for a pair of decent speakers to go with it. Although the receiver itself was a JC Penney all-in-one unit of modest quality from the mid-80s, it still played well once restored and had a decent 2x30 watt power output rating. I started looking for speakers on eBay and was pretty discouraged with everything I found at the time--all the offerings were at the extremes of expensive high end equipment or cheap no-name junk. Then I came across a listing for the JBL 2600 stereo loudspeakers. I wasn't sure if they would be suitable for use with my receiver or not, but they arrived and I hooked them up to find out. The good news is that these speakers have incredible output quality. The sound is rich, clear and detailed. There is plenty of bass, a good clear midrange and sharply defined treble output. The sound is well balanced. When I played a variety of sources (turntable record, cassette tape and FM radio) into these speakers, there was no sign of any one frequency towering over or lacking as compared to the others. It didn't seem to take a huge amount of power to drive these speakers. Even with the volume dial set low (two or three out of a possible ten) their output was loud enough to be heard easily. The only potential pitfall of buying speakers like these has to do with their age. The pair I bought were over twenty years old but they'd been very well cared for. This particular pair of speakers could easily have passed for "never used". However, one must be aware that foam surrounds can rot, speakers can be overdriven to the point of damage, and people may not always take the best care of their speakers. All of these points should be checked out before you buy--so be sure to ask the seller first if their listing is unclear. If you have a stereo receiver with a power output rating between 10-100 watts (as mentioned in the manual for these speakers), these speakers will not let you down. They'll make your music sound as good as it can, and their size is ideal if you don't have room for huge speakers.

Different, but still a worthwhile film to see...
Previous experiences with "part 2" movies made much later than the original have usually left me disappointed. As such, I did not have high hopes when I discovered that a second Blues Brothers movie had been made almost twenty years after the original. I opted to buy a copy of this film mainly because of curiosity. Blues Brothers 2000 picks up the story from the first film with the lone surviving Blues Brother Elwood (played by Dan Aykroyd) getting out of prison. Everything he knows and loves is gone. Undeterred, he sets in to buying a new car (The Bluesmobile) and getting his old band back together, but not before becoming an unexpected mentor to a young boy. The story works pretty well, as does the humor. In no time at all, the police are after Elwood and his band, just like old times. He makes other enemies along the way as well. Many of the situations he and the band get into are completely over the top, but they work well as compared to the original. Impressively enough, many members of the original cast reunited to make this film. Perhaps even more so impressively, almost all of the cast looks and acts almost like they did in the original film. My only complaint is that at times, the movie demands that you suspend your disbelief in the face of some very unlikely situations, such as the police officer ascending through the revival tent and assuming a new identity. Likewise, the scenes involving the bayou and voodoo queen are somewhat hollow and unrealistic. All in all, I felt the Blues Brothers 2000 film was a worthwhile movie to watch. The plot excels at showing us a believable future for the Elwood and the band. There is still quite a bit of comedy and the style is true to the original. Finally, the musical performances scattered throughout are not to be missed. It's definitely worth watching.

HoldPeak Digital Clamp Meter Multimeter 6000C TrueRMS Diode BackLite HP-570S-APP

An Inexpensive Clamp Meter with Bluetooth Capability
Holdpeak's 570S-APP clamp meter is the true RMS version of the 570C-APP meter. (True RMS meters read accurately with distorted AC waveforms, which is generally a good thing.) The meter itself is capable of measuring AC and DC voltage, temperature, resistance, capacitance, diodes and both of AC and DC current. This is a physically large clamp meter, and like most inexpensive meters, there have been some shortcuts taken in terms of safety and robustness. While you shouldn't expect that this will hold up like any big name brand model, it's still accurate and useful. It does appear to be better made than the more basic 570C-APP model. Unlike that which comes with the 570C-APP meter, this meter's companion application is pretty hokey. Clearly written for Holdpeak by a third party, it's made to track and monitor multiple types of devices and appears to have been primarily designed for fitness monitoring equipment. As of this writing, you have to set up an account in order to proceed with configuring and using the application. Once you get through that process, though, it works well enough. I doubt it will happen, but I'd like to see a proper meter-focused application designed for this meter without any requirement to sign in or create an account. With the right software, this meter could also be used with a portable computer. I'd like to see some meter manufacturer (or even a motivated third party) support this with their Bluetooth wireless meter products.
