ENGLISH MUSIC - NOT A ONE MAN BAND!
Parry is a vastly under-rated composer coming (as with C V Stanford, equally under-rated) firmly within the 'Elgar Era'. I have always been a passionate fan of Elgar, and continue to love his work, but it can rather unfairly undermine the work of other British composers of the time. In fact, Parry's Symphonies are wonderful. I had never heard 'From Death to Life' before, but was completely bowled over by it. It certainly bears comparison with anything similar by Elgar, or, perhaps more pertinately, by Richard Strauss. A very powerful, very moving, but very subtle work that I would highly recommend to lovers of English music, who may, like me, not have heard it before.

THE CELLO CONCERTO IS A TRULY REMARKABLE WORK!
This was an incredible discovery! It must not now remain unknown, after it's history of gradual re-discovery. Not only is this the best cello concerto I have ever heard, it is one of the most remarkable pieces of music I have ever heard! It is quite a long work, but endlessly varied and entertaining - recognisably Offenbach in it's lyricism, and yet a serious, and seriously difficult, work. The performance and sound quality are good. (I understand the conductor is an Offenbach expert, and largely responsible for restoring it to it's original glory, mainly through much research.) Few people realise that Offenbach was a brilliant cellist (called at the time in France the 'Liszt of the Cello). If you buy just one cd this year, or any year, buy this one and you won't be disappointed!
