FUJIFILM FinePix S5000 - old now but still worth having
This will be the third S5000 Ive owned (Im just replacing one with a failed LCD that Fuji can no longer repair). Why?? Well despite having some really nice SLR kit and also having the slightly larger S6500, the S5000 or the slightly later S5500 has a number of features that keeps me using them. Firstly, size. Its a lot smaller than most similar SLR style cameras, but it has good ergonomics. It fills the gap between a small point and shoot, and a DSLR. Secondly, I tend to shoot a lot of stuff specifically for post processing (both scientific stuff and creative imagery) and the S5000 is one of few cameras in its original class that has facility to save images in RAW format as opposed to standard jpg. This probably isnt a key feature for most users, but if you are a tech user or you shoot HDR images this is a massively useful facility. Thirdly, resolution. Yes it doesnt have masses - and thats not always a bad thing. These days most of my cameras have 12mP or higher resolution, which is great if Im printing off some 20x16 prints - but how often do I actually do that? In reality most of my images end up for screen viewing at 72dpi and I end up chucking away loads of pixels to get down to a sensible image size. OK, the camera on my phone has slightly higher res, but it doesnt have a fraction of the lens quality. I tend to be away for work - usually travelling light, and have to edit and upload images using my netbook. A full resolution image off my 12mP DSLR just about kills photoshop or Gimp on the netbook, whereas the 3mP files are easily managed. Yes perhaps 5mP would be nice, but the resulting images are fine for prints upto 10x8 and great for blogging or uploading to facebook etc. Its worth mentioning that the camera itself will actually interpolate up to 6mP but generally speaking its better to do that in a software package later rather than via pixel doubling in the camera. (If you see someone selling one as 6mP - be aware that no - its really 3mP native with 6mP via some fudging!) Finally, Cost. These brilliant little cameras change hands for as little as £40 these days. That less than most nasty point and shoot cams or mobile phones. If I drop it, or lose it, or it ends up getting soaked Im not going to lose too much sleep over it. Now the bad points - yes it does have some! Firstly XD. it used XD cards, and XD cards cost far more per meg than SD cards. Dont ask me why - its betamax and VHS all over again! Secondly, LCD lag. There is a tiny but annoying lag in the processing time between light entering the CCD and the image showing up on the LCD or viewfinder (also LCD) This makes getting the camera absolutely level against a seascape for example very annoying because you tend to slightly overshoot tilting it one way then the back the other due to the lag. (better to just fix it in photoshop later) Thirdly, Shutter lag. Its nowhere near as bad as most compacts from the same era, but believe me if you plan on shooting fast action, invest in the skills of a psychic to tap you on the shoulder just before you need to take the shot - or you will miss it ;) Thats about it really. I could drone on about tech specs and comparisons to others in its class, but at the end of the day you have to find a camera you are comfortable with to get good results, and for me this is a great little camera that feels like a favorite (if a little old) arm chair. This is the ideal compact and inexpensive SLR style cam if 3mP is enough. Enjoy :)

Like all the best books leaves you without answers but the right questions
I originally bought the kindle version of this book, but found it so useful I bought the hardcopy. While pretty much all of the information can be found on the web, it is at present the most complete collection of info for those who may be contemplating a pico sat project of whatever flavour. Even if your aspirations are more earth bound, I would recommend a lot of the concepts in this book for those thinking about high altitude balloon projects. Educators who may have students coming to them with a space or near space project would do well to read this. This book does NOT give you all the answers, but it does give you enough QUESTIONS to begin your project.

Bargain 2in1
Better than expected. Super slim, metal (covered) case. Looooong battery life. And best of all supports android apps, and if you switch to the development channel Linux apps too! So far I can find little to comment negatively about at all. If you just need to get work done it's ideal. No hassles, no setting up problems. And at the reduced price something of a bargain.
