The Thirty-One Kings: Richard Hannay Returns By Robert J. Harris
09 Jul, 2023
Thrilling, exciting and engrossing throughout!
It is 1940. Now semi-retired, Richard Hannay and his wife have gone away for a few days. Then an aeroplane arrives with a message for him - shortly after it crashes. The message contains a code which must be decoded. He then returns to London where he is assigned on an important war-time mission. He must find out about a man called ROLAND and who the 31 KINGS are. This could determine the outcome of the war! Together with his friends they have to find Roland and get him away before the Germans take their triumphant entry into the city of Paris, which will occur soon! There are many dangers, perils and unseen events that occur, but they find out what is going on and try to get away with Roland. Now it becomes a desperate and urgent need to get out! There are some unexpected twists and turns with an exciting and dramatic end! For a thin book it packed in some much and reminded me of the original John Buchan Hannay books which I have read but not for some time. I strongly recommend these to the readers if you have enjoyed reading this! I really enjoyed reading this book! Read the John Buchan books and meet the original Richard Hannay and his friends soon!
Call the Dying (Lydmouth Series) By Andrew Taylor
09 Jul, 2023
Engrossing and well-written read
Richard Thornhill is worried - there have been a series of minor crimes in the area against local people. And now the target is the local Gazette! Jill Frances, the temporary editor, has taken over temporary due to illness and is really struggling! Several of her staff, including herself, have been attacked and arson carried out on this old building. She suspects that it is Fuggle, the editor of the Post, who wants the Post to be the daily newspaper and close down the Gazette. Plus the newspaper is losing trade and the Post has gained it all! She has to take action and quickly! Then a man goes missing. Then old Dr Bayswater is murdered in his own home! Thornhill persists in his investigation despite problems and opposition. Eventually all the clues and mysteries are solved with some excellent red herrings, twists and turns and a very exciting and dramatic end! It was well-worth reading!
Say it with Poison (A Mitchell & Markby Mystery) By Ann Granger
21 Jan, 2022
Long in chapters but engrossing and well written!
This is the first book in the Mitchell and Markby mysteries written in 1991. The chapters are too long in my opinion and could have been shorter, but I did forgive it because it was such a good story and an excellent mystery. It introduces Meredith Mitchell and Alan Markby, her friend and later boyfriend. Meredith has been invited to a wedding - her cousin's daughter is going to get married. On her arrival at the village of Westerfield, not far from Banbury, she finds some strange objects by the main gate: an ox heart, a threatening letter and a disfigured doll. Someone in the family is being blackmailed and threatened. She is persuaded to keep the facts secret and not tell the police! Then Peter Lorrimer's cat goes missing - it is later found dead - it has been poisioned. Then Peter Lorrimer is found dead - also poisoned! Together, after meeting each other, Mitchell and Markby investigate and find out the murderer is and how these deaths are linked together. There are various twists and turns with an unexpected ending! It is a good introduction to these series of murders - I recommend it to all lovers of mystery books!
