Perfect for Freezing Bacon
I've been searching for a container that I could use to freeze store-bought bacon, using only what I need each time, and this is perfect! Without using the drainage tray, it can hold 3 pounds of thick-cut bacon (32 slices total: 28 slices, separated in two's with thick strips of plastic; plus 4 more slices, in two's, laid across the top). Packed this way, there is no wasted space and the container seems to work perfectly in the freezer. I also packed it with regular/thin-sliced bacon (separated in three's with thick strips of plastic), but this time it held just shy of 3 pounds.
I should mention that, when packed full and frozen, it takes a little work to get that first portion of bacon out from the full container (after the four easy strips on top are removed), but some gentle persuasion with a butter knife did the trick (assuming you've separated the portions with wax paper or plastic strips before freezing them). After that first portion is removed, the rest pop out easily. Another trick to aid in removing that stubborn first portion is to use TWO strips of plastic between the first and second portion on either side.
Overall, for freezing bacon in individual portions, this container is perfect: perfect size, freezer-safe, top-rack dishwasher-safe, solid air-tight seal, & doesn't take up (too) much space. After owning it several months, I am very pleased!
p.s. For the plastic divider strips, I am using a ribbed, heavy duty plastic shelf liner ("Warp's LifeLiner") that I have found at Bed, Bath & Beyond and Walmart (for $10 to $15), cut into 10¼" x 1⅞" strips.
