Great first proper coffee machine
1 of 1 found this helpful This is a great way to get into brewing espresso. I upgraded from a Nespresso because I wanted better milk frothing and this didn't disappoint.
It only takes a few seconds to heat up and behind brewing and all of the components feel solid and well made.
It now comes with a pressurised and non-pressurised 54mm basket set. I get pre-ground espresso so the grind size is pretty hit or miss so I used different baskets to get the best extraction. You can use the preset programmes to brew, or you can hold and release the brew button to get a custom preinfusion and brew time. This is great if your espresso recipe is measured by weight. I normally do a 2:1 ration (18g of coffee for 36g of espresso out of the machine). The custome brew setting really helps with this, but you need to stop the machine before you hit your target weight or you'll go over if your scales aren't amazing.
There is room for a scale and a small mug under the brew head, but for larger cups I remove the drip tray so they fit under the machine.
The automatic milk steaming is really amazing. I'm not a confident milk frothing expert so having a the option to do it automatically is amazing. It also cleans itself after each use so it doesn't get clogged up. You can't brew espresso and use the milk frother at the same time, but it doesn't take a long time to do either process and there wouldn't be room for a cup and the milk jug under the machine anyway. Have a look at dual boiler machines if you want to Steam milk and brew espresso at the same time. I wouldn't want to be distracted frothing milk while the espresso is brewing so I'm glad I have to do them one at a time.
The drip tray is my only annoying area. It's a bit fiddly to clip onto the machine and water sometimes seeps under the machine when you're brewing. After I've poured my coffee I put the milk jug back under the milk wand so it purges into the jug and not the drip tray. It avoids getting a mouldy milky drip tray when you let it clean itself into the milk jug and the milk temperature sensor doesn't get wet in the process.
I literally never used the branded 'Razor' for dosing my coffee as I measure it by weight when I'm dosing. The double sized baskets hold up to 20g of coffee so you likely won't overfill it.
I would get a tamper mat so you can properly compress your coffee in the basket without slipping. Aside from that it comes with everything a beginner needs to get started brewing espresso.
It's a great little machine and if you want quick and easy foamy milk this is definitely a great option. If you aren't ready for brewing espresso Sage have teamed up with Nespresso to make their new line of espresso machines which have a similar milk frother.
