Riveting book, clever, highly emotional and beautifully told
Stephen McGann's beautiful memoir is very cleverly structured and brilliantly told. It covers 150 years of social, economic and medical history through the humble lens of his own family, which until his generation had for the past 150 years scraped a subsistence living in the slums around Liverpool docks. It's a small family story that takes in a massive social sweep, from the Irish famine to the establishment of the NHS and universal education that allowed him and his brothers to prosper. A fantastic read.
