Grant, the general Lincoln needed
Catton's two books on General Grant gave me my first, well-researched, look at a badly judged American who rose to true greatness. Grant coupled an aggressive spirit, faith in the American fighting man and a willingness to learn. He became at least the equal of Robert E.Lee and has the distinction of forcing the surrender of three entire Confederate armies. In his campaign against Lee Grant twice out maneuvered that distinguished leader, but his generals would not believe it, and in their fear, caused poorly executed assaults after giving Lee time to regroup. So, while orchestrating the campaigns of Sherman and Thomas, Grant held Lee and then defeated him. Catton's points are upheld by other major historians like Shelby Foote and McFeeley. To read Catton is to get a solid appreciation of Grant the General

Portable and potent
Great little grinder, small enough to be portable but big enough to quickly grind enough beans several cups of coffee

brought to life
This was an excellent series that helped make the public more aware of the events and people of the civil war
