Duke Ellinton - The Collection 1946-47
This is a set of 3 CDs containing 64 performances by the Duke Ellington Orchestra recorded in 1946 and 1947 taken from electrical transcriptions made especially for radio stations only. They cover the period when Duke was finishing his RCA Victor stand, his brief stay with Musicraft, and the start of his return to Columbia in 1947.Timings vary from a one minute, fifty three second "Tea For Two" to an uninterrupted six minute, twenty three second "Happy Go Lucky Local". Eight of these selections have never been issued on commercial recordings. The recording quality is excellent throughout and the music is of consistently high quality from an orchestra that still contained several of his finest soloists playing at their peak.
This set complements "The Duke Box" which is from the early 1940s and is a worthwhile addition to any Ellington collection and is highly recommended.

Hank Jones - The talented one.
An excellent CD by a great pianist. He has been present at almost one thousand recording sessions - a record only surpassed by one other pianisy - namely Duke Ellington. He was CBS house pianist for many years, has won several Grammy awards. His most famous session was as accompanist for Marilyn Monroe when she sang Happy Birthday Mr President at the White House.
I bought this solo album because I admire his playing so much. I saw him live at the 1977 Nice Jazz Festival and have been a fan of his ever since then.
