great to encourage reading
I bought these books because I didn't think my daughter was being progressed fast enough by the books from school and the school are not willing to take my concerns on board. She was nervous to read books from the bookshelf or the library because they have difficult words in them so I wanted a progressive reading system. I bought this first set in colour (because someone was selling the colour set) but have bought the rest of the series in black and white. It was much cheaper and she seems happy enough with b&w pictures. They seem really simple (to an adult) but she loved that and progressed through them fairly quickly. The words in the story are given at the front of the book first so they have seen them before they start reading. Longer words are broken up into syllables to help them see then put back together again. There is a table at the back with 'speed words' in which are basically the words from the story so that you can see if they can really read them or were just able to guess what they were in the context of the story. My daughter is now getting well through the other sets and happier to try other stories from the library etc now. If you want a reading system for your child (mine is currently in year 1) this is a good one in my opinion.
