The History and Description of Leeds Castle, Kent by Charles Wykeham Martin...
    01 Feb, 2017
Leeds Castle, Kent History & Description of........
What makes this very interesting is that the book was written by the then owner, Charles Wykeham-Martin. Today most of what we learn of Leeds Castle is the 40 year restoration of the castle by the late Olive Baillie. The Wykeham-Martins and their forbears held the castle for many generations, but succession was not always in the direct line. The late Mrs Florence Wykeham-Martin was a mentor and 'adoptive' aunt to me in my youth and over the years gave me a great deal of information about Leeds Castle. She was the widow of the last Wykeham-Martin squire of the estate, Cornwallis Wykeham-Martin, before the castle was sold to pay death duties in 1926. Aunt Florence was left with 'The Cottage' at Dorridge in Warwickshire. This was a W-M shooting box, better known as Bentley Manor. But when your main residence is a castle, I guess a small 10 bedroom country house may well rank as "the Cottage". I have happy memories. So for most of my life I have had a huge interest in Leeds Castle, its Estate, and the history of the Wykeham-Martins and their ancestry.
