Sophisticated Westerners testing the limits of Love
I am new to Paul Bowles' fiction and am a little 'bowled' over by this man's creative powers. The Sheltering Sky is a masterpiece of writing and anyone who would try to film this story is brave, indeed. But as a film it succeeds. Not in the same way as the book, but as a beautiful work in itself. The desert scenery in the film, alone, is worth viewing and creates a sweltering uneasiness to match that of the relationships of the three main characters. Release from the heat comes at a huge price but the generosity of the desert gives breathtaking beauty and healing sensuality just when all seems most desolate. This is all done with the beauty of the changing sands, the painful honesty of the characters, and the primitive settings of the desert people. John Malkovich is perfect as Port, Deborah Winger is perhaps too sweet to play his wife,as she is written in the book, but this sweetness made her desperation more touching, which worked fine for the film.

Nostalgic, sweet, old R&B. Hadda Brooks is a great find
Way back when I used to listen to Huggie Boy and Johnny Ottis on the radio in L.A., there were many artists who sang in an intimate and distinctly urban style and I loved listening to them on the radio. When R&R hit in the late 50's and the big cross over stars like Chuck Berry and Ray Charles hit the charts these other artists kind of faded away. The way of singing is soft and very "plain", and the accompaniment is done by a piano and a bass and guitar and not much more. It's a really nice style and hard to find. Hadda Brooks, whom I ran into in an old movie is a master. Thanks for making this available, to Virgin Records and Ebay.
