Navigation by the sun
One of the best books I have found that explains Sun sights, The mathematical concepts, and how to use them; however, this edition is ages old when it comes to the navigational tables which requires multiple correction factors to make them relevant. If you are just learning how to use the sun for navigation, this book is for you. For practical implementation, buy a more up to date set of navigational tables.

Solar Filter material
I used some of the small sheet of film and it was adequate in size for renovating a sextant sun filter. The solar film was thin and somewhat fragile but once installed between two pieces of plastic;it reduced the blazing sun down to a red ball easily viewed through the sextant eyepiece. There are three very important concepts to consider when looking at the sun in such a manner. The solar filter material should be CERTIFIED to block ALL of the harmful rays, that there are no "pinholes" in the material, and that it is also for use in combination with an optical eyesight. A piece of dark plastic or glass you happen to have on hand just will not do if you want to avoid eye damage. This material was designed for use with astronomy telescopes and met all three criteria.
