A great SAFE way to interface a logic level output to a mains control triac.
A great SAFE way to control a mains (240v) power triac from a logic level (5v) computer I/O pin. This optotriac acts as both; the interface between the logic control system and the power control circuitry, and also provides (with an appropriate circuit board layout) the safety isolation between them.

Cool (quite literally) product, even at over 50% of its rated load capacity
Runs 1.5kw (~7A) at 230v comfortably with only a small heat sink - 30x50mm. The isolated tab for the heat sink saves any worries about insulating this with a mica washer and needing an insert for the bolt, just bolt it straight on to the heatsink with some thermal compound. I’m driving it with an MOC3021 opto-triac straight from a 5v logic output, running a resistive water heater load. Very happy with the performance so far; runs cool at my (just over) 50% of the rated capacity load, hence the title for this review.

A great price, for a “trusted name” device from Victron
This is not some cheap Chinese clone, or “similarly looking product”, but one that comfortably works up to its rated load, and comes complete with the benefit of a 5 year manufacturers warranty. Bench testing with a variable power supply confirms the programmeable trigger and alarm voltage points as published, and once installed it copes at its’ published current rating with virtually no drop in voltage, even at its maximum of 65 amps (~1.6 Kw @ 24v).
