800 years in the making
1 of 1 found this helpful I bought the film because of teh scope of this epic, and because it was one of the few truly international efforts in cinema. With a russian director,Japanese lead actor and a supporting cast from China,Mongolia and Korea i enjoyed this interpretation of Chingus Khans early years.Although it isn't historically accurate the breadth and scope of the film makes up for the few flaws it has with it's pace.Besides if you want to actually see what 20,000 mounted warriors look like in battle see this film. This may one of the last of these films to use that many live actors in the enormous battle scenes. There were a few film productions of different nationalities that made films to celebrate the 800 anniversary of Chingus Khans birth but i found this one the most entertaining and the one that made me feel as if enveloped in Mongolian culture. The fact that they speak mongolian helped. The battle scenes are huge and brutal. They have a sensual fell you can almost smell the blood and filth of ancient battles.SERIOUSLY.The director also made sure that none of the characters looked too pristine i.e. no bath tubs in the middle of mongolia and that tone also helped transport you to a grittier more visceral film.Even the swords looked worn and roughly finished.Tadanobu Asano does a great job as Chingus and i have enjoyed his talent in a variety of films from subtle quiet films to over the top horror films his versatilty always surprises me!

great cgi visuals.plot was ok but well worth it.
i liked the producers of the dvd.the same great team that did the appleseed animes.the plot was lacking, but for these types of films it's great to put your brain on hold and take a stunning visual journey.the state of the art 3D cgi is amazing and you get the feeling when you watch this this film that the future of anime and animation in general is at the threshold of opening universes and worlds we can't imagine.Yet.the fact that this used disc was resurfaced was a big selling point for me.on the flat screen with an upconvert dvd player your jaw hits the floor as the world of Vexille unfolds for you.the jet car scene through the tunnels was superb.i can't wait for the next film by this team of film makers.

Akira Kurosawa and samurai cinema classics
These two movies are the zenith of chambara/jidai geki films. If you're familiar with classic Saturday Night Live with John Belushi these two films is where he got inspiration for his "samurai" character.Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai give performances that will impress the fans of samurai cinema. The end duel in Sanjuro has stuck with me since i first saw this film at the old Toho Theater in Hawaii.I was 3 years old.Mifunes anti-bushido character inspired many knock offs in the chambara genre, but here it is fresh and vital.Yojimbo is a film that EVERYONE loves. In Japan they said the kids loved Yojimbo and the adults loved Sanjuro.I love both films but because Sanjuro was my first theater film ever it has been my favorite film of all time for decades. The humor in both films is what the makes them great.Although the action alone would make them outstanding films the dark humor in Yojimbo and the cynical snipes Mifune quips in Sanjuro towards the hapless 9 young samurai make these films more personal. If you get a chance add these to your library if you haven't already.
