Luminously inviting, alluring but alas, disappointingly self-indulgent, pretentious and narcissistic. Typical Malick fare !
Firstly, the copy of my DVD can be deficient, erratic regarding the playing of the bonus feature and when it generally plays at the start at times. The actual film I constantly and think, will always find attractively and irresistibly luminous, inviting, and alluring. It captivates endlessly in its style and luminous presentation. The cinematography is very beautifully lyrical and poetic, a characteristic trademark, and what one has come to expect from Terrence Malick. And the musical score also has a quietly appealing quality that has proven to worm around within me. But I am afraid regarding the story, characters and pace - that`s a disappointment and rather poor, and flaccid like a collapsed food dish that becomes annoyingly runny, and formless. Screenwriter Ric`s constant dalliances with younger women are very tediously self-indulgent and hence, boring, and wearing ! And the family dynamics would have been greatly better if conventionally or otherwise defined, and illustrated by a condensed, conventional, and not so allusive dialogue. Film looks great but is far too self-absorbed, self-indulgent, pretentious and narcissistic like its subject matter !
