This is a satisfying narration of the Jules Verne story, with special effects by Ray Harryhausen (he's great!) music score by Bernard Herrman.
Escapees from a Civil War prison camp are blown way off course in a balloon they borrowed - no...stole. They find themselves on a deserted island somewhere in the Pacific - well I think so - and are joined by two women who were shipwrecked, and come face-to-face with Captain Nemo / Nautilus.
They have to deal with pirates, a active volcano and Harryhausen's creature nightmares. These include very large hungry crab, a aggressive dodo, a bee and a disgruntled squid. Most of the creatures turn out to be very eating boiled or even roasted!
The movie holds up well because of a strong story, good action, and fairly well-defined characters. It features Herbert Lom, in my view an under-rated actor, and Joan Greenwood. Her plummy, smoky voice is inimitable.

Factory Girl DVD
Bought this for my daughter who is studying English and creative writing at Uni. The story goes, a beautiful, wealthy young party girl drops out of Radcliffe Uni in 1965 and heads to New York to become Holly Golightly. She meets a hungry young artist named Andy Warhol and he promises to make her the star that she always wanted to be. And like a Super-Nova she explodes on the New York scene only to find herself slowly lose grip on reality..
