Slimline HDD Alert!
1 of 1 found this helpful I have had this laptop for just a few hours now. So far I have found that it it boots into Linux Mint 17.3 in a few seconds only! Shutdown is even faster... The Thinkpad T430 does only have room for a slim 7mm hard drive. Just a few months ago this would be a deal breaker. Not so today, as at least one manufacturer has already introduced a 2TB 7mm spinning HDD. Sure, it will be slower than the SSD, but for around £90, I can have 2TB.
This machine does have the oft-slated chiclet style keyboard, but I find it ok. The only caveat for me is the secondary functions on the F1-F12 keys are quite hard to see. Also, on the older Thinkpads, F1-F12 keys were clearly set out in groups of four, making it very easy to find specific keys, even in poor light.
The screen seems nice & bright, battery life surprisingly long & audio sufficiently loud. I prefer to use the trackpoint rather than the touchpad. Thankfully, Lenovo have retained the ability to switch off either devices in BIOS.
Two USB3 ports on a laptop of this spec is a nice touch, especially as other brands may only fit them to higher spec machines. Also, while I personally have no use for it, I can add a WWAN card to use the sim card slot, which is a nice touch.
The keyboard does not flex & the overall build of this Thinkpad seems typically solid, as in previous models.
This is of course, very early days for me, but previous experience of Thinkpads makes me confident that I will remain pleased with this model for some time to come. All in all, it seems to be a rather nice laptop.
