One to see before you die!
It's hard to choose between James Gandolfini and Robert Redford when trying to decide who steals the show in this superbly written - and cast - story of a battle-weary Colonel (Redford) sent to the brutal military prison run by the war-enthusiast Major (Gandolfini) who has never seen a battlefield! The two characters are as opposite as the acting styles of the two stars. The strength of the film is subtle and almost understated. The story, screenplay and performances of its stars, ably supported by Mark Ruffalo and many others take you on a journey with Colonel Eugene Irwin from his entry into the prison with his desire to "do my time and go home" through his decision to take on Gandolfini's sadistic regime through to the conclusion of the film. The only criticism I have of the film is that you have to suspend disbelief during the riot sequence when the inmates wheel out a huge home-made trebuchet (seige catapult) from between the buildings in the yard! But even this does not detract from what is ultimately a superb story of the strength of the human spirit in the face of apparently insurmountable adversity and how one man can make a difference. As you scratch the surface of the supporting cast you find characters and histories that will inevitably have you cheering for the underdogs as the film reaches it's cIimax. I decided to buy this DVD because, having seen it once on television, I wanted to be able to watch it whenever the mood takes me - and it does on a regular basis! This is definitely one of the films to see before you die!

A colmedy legend at his peak!
For the benfit of the uninitiated, this is stand-up legend Bill Hicks at his best! Sadly, this was filmed on his last UK tour before his untimely death that, ironically, sealed his place in the history of comedy as one of the greats! His brilliantly observed but extremely caustic humour is turned on religion, politicians, television and the music industry as well as smoking, drugs and advertising! Nothing escapes him! He paved the way for so many comics such as Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle et al. It's accompanied by a fascinating insight into the life of Hicks and how his upbringing in the midwest 'bible belt' provided the inspiration for so much of his best work! I first saw the 'Revelations' show 15 years ago and it's as enjoyable now as it was all those years ago - enjoy this comedy classic!!
