I have never read any of J.R.R. Tolkien's books, so cannot comment on how true this film remains to it's source, but wether the story is the same or not, this is still a great film.
As the first film of three, this introduces most of the important characters as well as setting the story in motion. It unfortunately does not have the same pace as the the other chapters, it's so weighed down with the narration it takes a while to get going.
One thing that stands out from director Peter Jackson's wonderful trilogy is the special effects. The various creatures of Middle Earth all look fantastic, many of these creatures have only ever existed within a computer, yet they still look real. The hobbits stand only half the size of the men next to them, and yet it all appears so believeable.
I'd definitely recomend The Fellowship Of The Ring, it really is a great film. I also believe, for those enjoyed the film, this extended version is worth owning.
