EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II good kit level zoom for 1.6 crop sensor Canons

This is great lens to complement the standard 18-55mm IS II kit lens that comes with a lot of EOS 550d/600d/650d, if you like wildlife/sports photography. Effective focal length compared to a standard 35mm is 88-400mm on a 1.6 crop sensor. This is a pretty capable zoom for casual use. It's reasonably sharp & the autofocus is pretty good. It's not fantastic in low light, but the image stabiliser is actually pretty good and does allow shooting a couple of notches lower on shutter speed than you could normally hand hold. It also works well while panning which is an improvement on the older model IS lenses.Read full review...

Gopod value for the price.. not a lens to be ashamed of!

This is an excellent lens for it's price. Whilst it cannot match robust and optical quality of L lenses it gives an aps type body similar capabilities to a 100-400 mm lens on a full frame body. Although not weatherproof it is lightweight and makes a good travel lens when bulk and weight are important. There is no distortion to worry about and it's sharpnes is surprisingly good. As with any lens, it is best to try to fill the feame as much as possible with the subject being photographed and big enlargements (to clarify a small object in the frame) tend to emphasise noise. Overall an excellent lens for the money with no serious drawbacks.Read full review...

Beginners Coice

I purchased the item to go with my Canon EOS 500D T1/rebel camera which came with a 18-55mm lens. This 55-250mm lens is the cheapest way to have the posess the ability to be able to cover shots from 18-250mm. The equivalent single lens with this capacity would cost almost twice as much.
The down side to this is that you have to swap the lenses over at times. If you are going to be using your camera for fast moving action shots where you are tracking and shooting you will be limited to one lens or the other. But if you are shooting planned images such as wildlife or vista shots you can pick and choose at you leisure.
The lenses are easy to handle and change over. The bodies are of a plastic but the locating pins and mechanisms are metallic. Overall the lens is quite sturdy.
The auto-focus works well and is quick and precise. The zoom function is ok if a little stiff. This is not an issue when taking still shots but when using the video option the zoom can look a bit jerky and this can cause the auto-focus to lose clarity momentarily.
The quality of image reproduction is excellent. I am only a beginner but I have found little or no distortion of the images I have taken.

I have seen cheaper versions of this spec of lens but when looking at the image reproduction from them they displayed image distortion at the upper and lower extremes of the zoom. In my opinion it was worth the little extra to ensure I could capture the shot I wanted without compromise, either not getting the framing I wanted or getting it and losing the image integrity.

The choice of quality is down to the individual. I have seen this lens at much higher prices on the net. I purchased from Digigood on E-bay and found them very good to communicate with and question before I purchased.

I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants quality at a reasonable cost, but if money was no object I would go for a single lens with the ability to do the job of both of mine and just give me the flexibility to try other areas of photography.

The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens is definitely an 7/10 for flexibility
8/10 for Quality 8/10 for Ability and 9/10 for Value.

Positively recommended.

Decent entry level, best value for money.

Having my new EOS 1100D for about a month, this purchase was almost certain from the beginning. This is my entry in DSLR photography and I have only to compare with my previous baby, PowerShot S5IS. Some fellows at work at first made some comments that created some doubts regarding the lens's brightness. So, I was rather happy to see that my expectations were highly met with the quality and the sharpness of the images taken. Targeting towards daylight sports, the depth of field achieved gave me some excellent shots with no problems at all. I have to admit that I was not ready to afford now at the beginning the amounts that similar lenses demanded. A tripod helps a lot in night shots for the moon and stars and I had a very nice set of shots during an open-theater performance with rather mid-intensity lighting.
I like the stabilization performance and the successful auto-focus. I dont like the feeling when the motor comes to a stop, almost can feel the camera kick due to inertia.
At all, this is one of the best options for a start, if things show that my talent needs higher quality optics to get advertised, then I shall think about it again. For now, job is done with pleasant results.

Very satisfied

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is ideal for even smaller wildlife (like birds). And if you'd like to add a little context to the image just zoom out to a minimum of 88 mm. But wildlife and sports photography also require low f-stops to achieve fast shutter speeds. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II offers f/4 at the wide end but only f/5.6 at the tele end which is a little slow. At least the excellent image stabilizer helps with slower shutter speeds but of course that can't prevent blur from subject movement.
At the wide end the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II has just the right focal length for nice portrait shots. Again the aperture rating is not excellent but certainly sufficient for this purpose and the large zoom range will even allow closeups from far away.

canon 55-250 efs lense

although not one of canons dearest lenses it does have a very good range and is very capable I purchased this to mate with the canon 50d camera it works well is well made and has a good finish the lense moves through the zoom range smoothly and the proof of the puddin is in the pictures taken I would recomend a tripod or similar be used because although light enough due to the range its asking a bit much of the cameras image stabaliser to expect pin sharp images by hand holding all in all a very nice lense to compliment the camera at avery reosonable priceRead full review...

Very pleased with this lens.

I bought this lens as I wanted the IS capability. So far it's been a pleasure to use. The focusing is positive and quick, the lens is not too bulky, and the focal length range suits most uses. The 55mm short end has to be considered a medium telephoto.
I don't know much about how the IS works, just that all my shots so far have come out sharp even in relatively low light situations. It also focusses quite close for close-up work. I've only used one other similar lens before, the Canon 75-300, and I much prefer this one as I can use this one hand-held whereas before I always needed a tripod.

A fine, compact light and competitively priced telephoto lens

A great purchase that follows on from my 18mm to 55mm Canon lens. Also good value at £118 and very light at 390 grams which is a positive attribute for those of us who like backpacking in the mountains. I really noticed the IS o a recent trek in the Lakes when I shot sunsets at a quarter of a second without shake. The only drawback is the need to change lenses but for sports like mountain marathons its just ideal with its 6% angle at 250mm, equivalent to 400mm in 'old money' and yet so much more compact that those film telephoto lenses. I highly recommend this lens for its sharpness throughtout the range - unlike my Tamron 18mm to 200mm, which is a disgrace at 200mm and following this purchase is about to be given the chop.Read full review...

Canon50-250

Excellent quality lens for the money. Bought for my son to use as he learns to use a proper camera.

Lightweight, sharp images. Plastic mount should be good enough for the weight of the lens.

Give you great pictures and excellent value for money

I bought this lens to take close ups of the local feathered wildlife.
The auto focus can be a little slow at dusk or in low light.
Amazingly clear images. Using the built in stabiliser and the camera hand held, allows you to take pictures on maximum zoom and the pictures are remain very sharp with little amount of shake showing up. It does what it says on the packet and is great value for money.Read full review...
