Compact camera ideal for point & shoot

Not professional standard but ideal for out & about snap type pictures. Purchased as replacement for accident damaged 3100 model (same features), but uses SD card as additional memory instead of Flash memory of 3100 model. It should be noted that the
maximum size SD card is 2GB.

Cool Pix

This is my third one - 1st was dropped when about 7 years old and it was cheaper to buy an eBay replacement. Part of the lens fell out of the 2nd one (after 2 years) - never found - but I love the camera so I am now on my 3rd. Takes excellent pix outside, especially in sunshine, but not so good inside. Perfect product for a snapper.Read full review...

Good value.

Ideal camera to slip in pocket. Good prints up to 4" x 6", makes a very good back-up camera.

Coolpix 3200

This is my first serious digital camera. I had a very cheap one I used for eBay but it was no good for anything else.
It is not meant to be a be all and end all review I am just pointing out its best bits.

I had a few requirements
At least a 3 x optical zoom –digital zoom not important as I don’t intend to use it
At least 3 mega pixels – it didn’t want it to become obsolete too quickly
Compact - no bigger than the palm of my hand
Not too heavy – my bag is heavy enough already
Able to use AA rechargeable batteries – I already owned lots and a recharger so this would cut my costs.
Reasonable start up and time lag between pictures – photo ops do not last for ever
Stylish – am a bit of a poser
Something easy to use but with extras if feeling more ambitious.
I didn’t want to spend any more on docking stations ect – I only had a budget of £150 mostly birthday money

After checking out the internet and reading all the magazines the Nikon 3200 was the only one meeting all my requirements. It is the updated version of the 3100 which has also had very good reviews. I had a look at one in a shop and I was sold – It fit in my hands like it was made for me. I ordered it from Amazon for only £1.99 over budget.

In the box you get

• Camera
• Hand strap
• USB cable – to transfer the picture to the pc (its under a hinge)
• Audio Video Cable
• Video Cable - so you can look at the picture on the TV and record them on video (I haven’t tried this yet)
• Nikon View software – to edit on the pc
• 2 x AA alkaline batteries – not rechargable

The main features

Set up is very fast - The manual is very easy to understand but it also comes with a quick start quide if you don’t want to read it.
Select point and shoot and you have entered the digital age.
You can turn it on and take a picture in 3 or 4 seconds.
Maximum of 3.2 megapixels – but you can change it to less and get more pictures.
14.5 mb Internal memory – you can get 18 pictures at 3 megapixels
If you do not use the camera for a minute (default setting) it goes into standby to save battery use – very useful if you forget to turn it off.
There is a self timer – it gives you 10 second to get into shot.
It’s easy to get clear close ups using the macro mode.
The ISO is the equivalent to a 35 mm ISO of 50.

The tech bits

There are 5 flash modes including auto.

You do not need to adjust the settings manually to get good pictures. There are 4 assit modes all with extra sub menus

Portrait –the main subject is clear and background details are softened - see example
Landscape – for just landscapes or for portraits where you also want the background
Sports – takes a series of shots from 2 up to 16 in 2 seconds
Night portrait – takes pictures at a slower shutter speed to prevent blurring

There are also 11 scene modes which cover the most common situations the flash settings are automatic.

Party/indoor – good for candlelight
Beach / snow -
Sunset- makes best use of colour
Dusk/dawn –uses slow shutter speed to made the most of low light
Night landscape – focus is at infinity
Close up – as close as 4 cm
Museum – this is useful when flash is not allowed
Fireworks - focus at infinity faster shutter release
Copy – for text or drawings
Back light – to prevent shadows
Panorama assist- easier to join a series of photos to get up to 360 degrees

There are also 5 colour options - Standard, Vivid, Black-and-White, Sepia and Cyanotype. I haven’t tried these yet.

Like most other digital cameras it has a manual viewfinder

Excellent photos but very slow.

As with other Nikon cameras I have used, the picture quality is excellent. In my opinion it is the best, by a long way. Sadly, this camera is very slow to use in almost all respects with the flash recycle time being unacceptably slow.Read full review...

John Lewis recommended it, and so do I

My first digital camera was awful. I couldn't understand the manual, and neither could the 12-year-old geek I gave it to.
So I went to John Lewis and said what I wanted. They sold me a Nikon 3200 and I was delighted.
When I lost it, I bought an identical one on eBay.
It gives a good picture quality, is user-friendly, and excellent for photoing small things to sell on eBay.
