Great Hobbist Suction Table Vice

This table top vice has the wonderful facility of a Ball & Socket head, below the jaws, to enable the clamped workpiece to be positioned in whatever position is most suitable for the hobbyist for the required task.

The vice can be used as a "third hand" for assisting in painting small figures; or to enable the drilling, cutting, filing etc., of small components. It's versatility makes potentially problematic manipulation of small items much simpler.

The suction clamping facility on the vice base works superbly - PROVIDED THAT THE SUCTION PAD IS PLACED ON A SMOOTH CLEAN SURFACE - before operating the lever to actuate the suction function.

Great suction but no stamina

This vice looked like exactly what I was looking for with its ability to angle the jaws to suit the item being held. However on using it, whilst the suction is excellent, it doesn't last very long. The suction is lost after about a minute.

I tried on various surfaces and tried using some grease on the rubber base to try improving the seal. It still wouldn't hold so the thing is useless. Shame really because otherwise it would be excellent value for money. I wish I had sent it back within the time in order to swap it for a vice which clamps down to the tabletop/bench etc.

Solid construction

The vice when it arrived seems to have a light covering of cosmoline or similar (a good thing!) so needs a good cleaning down and relubricating before use. The construction is metal and is reasonably heavy.
The suction base leaves a little to be desired however. While it does work it's not going to stay clamped down on any surface that isn't absolutely free from dust etc (this was expected and in no way detracts from my particular use of the vice)

This is an ideal table top vice for locksporters at a fraction of the cost of some of the 'named' brands.

solid

It's a good hunk of metal, so it weighs a fair bit more than some of the plastic alternatives, but that does mean it'll survive a fair bit of use and abuse. The suction plate which keeps it locked in place works very well on a suitable smooth surface ( I use a tempered glass chopping board), but it's less reliable on a normal desk top.
The rubber covers over the vice head work really well - cushion parts without any loss of grip.

Works really well for a hobby vice.

Mini vice

There are no a few niggles with this vice but it is very cheap and they are easily overcome, the suction does not work for long but it is only designed for light weight use so it shouldn't matter, the screw is heavily burr'd but if you spray with some wd40 and treat it like you're retapping it while you're winding it in and out slowly, it will free up so although it does have a few niggles it is not hard to overcomeRead full review...

Ok vice.

Good solid & robust vice sadly let down by the suction base which doesn,t appear to stick to any surface. The handle to tighten the rubber base (to create the suction) is stiff & difficult to use & can only be fully turned when the vice is positioned right on the edge of the table or work surface.Read full review...

Little Vice which can be useful

What can I say other than disappointing. Looks like it has been kicking around in some shop for a while.

But if you come across a cheap unit and only do light vice work it us OK. The table needs to be smooth for the suction base to work. Dry lube might help with the threadsRead full review...

A model makers dream!

Probably one of the best tools I ever bought, well engineered & so versatile. Some of the reviews
say that the suction plate doesn't last long but the work surface has to be as smooth as glass. If it
isn't, try rubbing baby oil or vasalene over the whole bottom plate.I did this ten days ago and it would still take me and several Tarzans to remove it. A model makers dream!!

Great vice at a bargain price. Recommended.

This is great value for money, and a real bargain for a sturdy little vice. My use for this vice is primarily to hold locks while I practice lockpicking. It swivels and angles nicely and allows the lock to be presented to me in the best position foir me to work on it.

The jaws are well machined and the action is smooth. Rubber jaw guards are included to allow you to hold more delicate items and to avoid the metal jaws leaving marks on them. The vice is quite heavy, which I see as a plus point. This isn't a tinny little joke of a vice. It is workmanlike and I'd expect it to last for decades.

The rubber suction mechanism sticks to polished and very smooth surfaces well. In my particular case I don't bother using it. I just plonk the vice down and it stays put. If you were using the vice to hold a work item that you were drilling, sawing, or filing you'd want to use the suction base. All in all I'm very pleased.

Couldn't get it to suck/stick

Couldn't get it to suck/stick to the smooth table. But for me working with electronic boards, it was fine & weighty enough to work with light items.
