Destruction Derby works great with the Sega steering wheel

It's amazing how much fun you can have with something when you expect nothing.
Videogames are pure psychology anyway, since they are just sets of instructions and computer code. It's the way they're designed and structured that determines how much fun we have with them.
First of all, Destruction Derby didn't get good reviews. Bad handling and long loading times are things I remember being mentioned. I remember the anticipation and expectation after the excellent demo that came with the Playstation. Everyone thought it was gonna be the best game ever made, and when it came out it of course wasn't. I remember watching my friend play it and just feeling apathy. Not sure why. The Playstation is so clinical and corporate, it's hard for games to really shine on it. It was deliberately designed to avoid looking like a toy, which is a shame, because toys are fun, and as every female knows, boys never grow out of loving toys. The Playstation was more a piece of consumer electronics and certainly succeeded at being that. If you've got a good Saturn pad and you're playing in 60Hz and RGB the Sega version of Destruction Derby just feels different.
When you play the game today and you know not to expect perfection, you can start to see the good things about it. The appeal of the game is just massive. The idea of racing around in a stock car, bashing into other drivers just for the fun of it. Whether you win the race or not it doesn't matter, it's the crashes that you want, and you might get lucky and soar through a gap between some cars ramming into each other or facing the wrong way and with a bit of skill as well you might win the race. The handling actually seems fine know I'm used to it (even better if you've got a SEGA steering wheel) and I knew about the loading times before I bought it so I just think of them as a little break from the action. I'm actually having loads of fun with it. It's not Radiant Silvergun. It's not £150. It's a piece of trash, that's what it's supposed to be. That's what stock cars are. People having some fun with cars that are no longer road worthy. Spend £10 on this and have some fun.
