Amazing Detail & Low Noise Floor from UK Built HIFI Cartridge.

Bought this UK Goldring G1042 cartridge to use on my Dual CS5000. On this turntable until now I've only used Ortofon Super OM cartridges right up to OM40 stylus.

I had always found the Ortofon OM series to be detailed, a little thin in balance (with emphasis on mid range), and with a remarkable ability to reproduce the sound of every speck of dust on a record - deep cleaning of most records a must The Goldring G1042 is very well reviewed with reputation of one of the finest moving magnet cartridges available, and hence gambled.

Was certainly not disappointed this cartridge retains all the detail benefits of the Ortofon OM, but without the negatives. The sound is reinforced with deep and solid bass, amazing detail retrieval in a musical way (instruments sound like instruments, not just sounds), and with an amazing ability not to reproduce every slight deflect such as imbedded dust specks. The overall sound balance and low noise floor is similar to CD reproduction, but with a little more ambience (as compared to a Marantz CD6006 UK Edition.

The cartridge does need care in setting up, and a slight tweak of alignment to its sweet spot, opened up amazing ambience and low distortion.

So all in all very happy with this effective upgrade. The other bonus is that replacement stylus is relatively cheap in the UK, as compared to the Danish Ortofon OM30 or OM40.

Superb MM Cartridge for its price!

Purchased this cartridge to replace an aging AT95ML. I have always like the sound of Goldring carts having used an E3 on a previous turntable.

Setup is a bit fiddly as there aren't any captive nuts in the body (bit of a shame) but, once sorted. setting the overhang and alignment was fairly straightforward as the cartridge has nice straight sides that make it easy with the protractor.

Using one of my Hi-Fi News test records (300Hz) tone test I played around with tracking weight and bias. I found that around 1.85g worked just fine with no distortion or harmonics when playing the various test tones. I also dropped the capacitance to 68pf as I felt it added just a fraction more detail at the top end (personal preference).

Listening to music, the detail and separation is excellent and makes me want to spend even more quality time with Linn (sure my wife thinks its another woman!!).

Overall, a great upgrade to my system and would recommend.
My system: Linn LP-12, Linn Lingo 3, Linn Uphorik phono stage, Marantz PM7000N and Mission QX5 Mk2 speakers.

Sounds Better than expected!

Enjoyed this overall experience but, wasn't prepared for how much better this cartridge sounded as compared to the pre-mounted Clearaudio MM cartridge. (Clearaudio Concept Turntable purchased new on ebay last year). The cartridge came with a mounting protractor which is a must. I also bought a cheap (Shure mechanical) Stylus Force gauge to dial this in. I spent hours researching how to mount and configure this cartridge, and the time spent really paid off. Can't wait to break the cartridge in over the holidays and then hear what it can really do! Prior to this, my old (1982) Rega Planar 2 with Grado Gold was my rig. The Rega actually sounded better than the Clearaudio with MM. Not anymore!Read full review...

Goldring 1042 MM Cartridge

Tricky to fit onto fixed hardshell due to the bulk of the MM Cartridge, but once fitted and aligned using the protractor provided gives a detailed and musical production. Worth the effort.

Excellent esp. the stylus!

Excellent cartridge. I like it more than my Grado Gold 3! It is not hard to install and set up. I am using a detachable head shell. May be more difficult on a fixed head shell. Still, should be easy enough if you have some experience.Read full review...

Goldring 1042 does the business.

Supplied with a slightly lower cantilever (hence changing the VTA & SRA) the cartridge now tracks very well and produces a dynamic sound with no over-emphasis of the treble (or any surface clicks and pops). After several years of moving coils I'm nicely surprised at how good this sounds in comparison. Only criticism really is the way its bolted to the head-shell, Not easy to hold the nuts in place while trying to screw in the head-shell bolts.. (Would a threaded cartridge body be a better idea?) .Read full review...

Excellent MM cartridge that won't break the bank.

This is a very competent cartridge, it performs well and sounds excellent for its relatively modest price. It's party trick is the striking lack of the noises that often accompany older, worn and second hand records. I have been collecting vinyl albums since I was a schoolboy and have many, I can now play them with great musical and emotional satisfaction.Read full review...

Amazing cartridge for years.

I owned one some 30 years ago, it impressed me then. Set up properly this cartridge can hold its own against any moving magnet and all but the very expensive moving coil cartridges. No wonder it is still in production unchanged. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.Read full review...

Amazing sound quality with incredible detail

Amazing sound quality with incredible detail -- Listening to my records has never been so good.
The background noise usually heard on vinyl is also greatly reduced.

A very good moving magnet phono cartridge.

Evenly balanced tuneful sound, particularly kind to surface noise on older LPs.

A bit fiddly to set up but worth the extra effort when you get it right.
