The Abyss... At last on Hi Def

Admirers of The Abyss have been waiting years for it to appear in high definition. This 3 disc set includes the blu-ray, 4K UHD, and an extensive bonus disc about the making of the film. There are two versions of the film :- the theatrical shorter version, and the 1993 Special Edition which contains half an hour of extra footage. Various scenes are extended throughout the film, but the most important is the added conclusion that explains more about the aliens and their reactions to human behaviour on our planet.
Unfortunately in the UK, The Abyss is not available to buy due to a controversial scene involving a rat being submerged in oxygenated fluid. This was previously cut in the first UK release, but instead of doing that again, the entire film has not, to date, been released in the UK on blu ray. The US version is complete and can be ordered as an import. The discs are Region Free so they will play on our system with no problems. The picture is sharp and clear, and I couldn't detect much sign of grain or deficiency for a film made in the 80s. Most stunning visuals? The final revelation of the aliens in the abyss. The audio is in DTS 5:1 on my system, and, pardon the pun, quite submersive. Particularly outstanding is the damaged crane dragging the Deep Core vessel to the edge of the abyss, and the battle /chase with psycho Michael Beihn in submersible pods.
