I Knew Nothing About Rasps When I Bought Them

I’m still within the first year of my woodworking year and still very much a learner. I bought these rasps after watching several YouTube videos saying a rasp is a much needed tool. When I bought them I didn’t have a clue what I was looking for except the word 'rasp'.

First of all it’s a very easy tool to learn and far more useful than I first thought. I didn’t use them for the first two months not sure when I should and they don’t have the glitzy reputation of tools like spokeshaves. I finally used them out of desperation, I wanted to round over a piece, going against the grain into a fairly tight corner. Because of the shape of the piece I couldn't follow the grain working the other way with the spokeshave.

So I gave the flat rasp a try and I was amazed how easy it was and how it didn’t damage the piece at all. I could go any way I wanted, with the grain or against the grain and it rounded over so very easy. I now use them on a very regular basis and they have quickly become one of my favourite tools once I gave them a try.

The pieces still need sanding but there’s no tear out to worry about. It’s the roundovers that I’m most astounded with, Im beginning to wonder if I wasted all that money on routers.

Am Very talking about rasps in general or this particular model? In truth I don’t have a clue, I still don’t know how you tell a good rasp from a poor one. However, I do know it’s this model I bought and it worked for me.

So far so good. Once unpacked they are loose until a rack space can be found. Improvement would be a set of sleeves to protect other tools from these rasps

Value wood rasps

Rasps were full size and as described. Slight rust on one of the files, but this did not detract from performance. they do not come in a case or bag.
