Ambitious topic dealt with by a master

I bought a copy of this several years ago, but found it hard going, so abandoned it after the first disc. Recently, someone else told me how good it was - and other reviews seemed to bear this out - so I decided to give it another go. Six discs in, I am enjoying it more than I expected - the story rattles along at incredible speed, but I think there is a lot of ground to cover. This is an abridged version, so any more tedious material may have been removed, although now I've got into it, I feel I would quite like to read the full-length version and may do so in future. As far as I can tell, the historical detail is accurate and it's a pleasant and entertaining way to learn about history and how its events shaped the lives of ordinary people.
