Great bike computer

Tons of data fields and ability to customize data to your specific needs. My favorite feature it the ability to sync with your heart rate zones for training purposes. It is easy to work with your lactate threshold in this manner.Read full review...

Great bike computer for any enthusiast

Modern design and features make it compact and very configurable. It has three screens each with up to 8 display fields, but the only way to configure them is one at a time on the unit. Would have preferred to make changes on the computer and just download the changes.

The heart rate monitor is the other main reason I bought this. The HRM enables me to determine and adjust my effort. There is very little information about using the HRM and it did not work well on my body, but it worked great on my friend's. After contacting Garmin a couple of times, I found out the sensor may need to be placed closer to the heart (left) rather than centered on the chest. This solved my problem.

Solid training tool.

I really like the Edge 500. I have a couple friends with 500s and a couple with 800s, but I figured with a smartphone, I didn't need the display on the 800. Garmin Connect seems to give quite a bit of post-ride data, but I like the simplicity of uploading a ride to Strava and comparing my current times to my previous efforts. Battery life is solid. I can go for 3-4 rides without worrying that the battery will die on me.

My only real complaint is with the speed/cadence sensor. Fitting it just right is a bit of a pain, and it seems to move just enough to throw the accuracy of the speed sensor off. Tightening the zip-ties down a bit may help, but I cut them flush already.

Overall, I'm very happy with the product.

Excellent Product!

The Garmin Edge 500 really enhances my cycling experience. There is absolutely no better way to analyze and study a ride.

When commuting to work I would know exactly how I was doing with time and effort. In other words, if I was holding back, this device would tell me by indicating I used an additional increment of time to reach the same point. Since the Edge 500 also works with various power meters, I will soon be purchasing one to indicate the wattage I am putting out. At that point there will be no variation in results due to grade or wind. Perfect!

There are 3 screens to load any variety of datafields. Now that I know exactly where to go to find, for instance, average cadence, there is never a moment when I can't find this statistic. The display is easy to read, day or night, since the device has a brilliant backlight feature.

My Edge 500 has never run out of battery, even though I don't usually charge it between rides. I've crashed a few times with it but it is extremely durable and reliable.

I upload my rides to Strava and Earndit. The only problem I have here is to get Earndit to recognize a ride, I have to upload it first to Garmin Connect. Earndit then automatically reads it from there.

This is an excellent product and I never do any cycle trips without it!

Best bike computer on the market

I've been eyeing Garmin's various bike computer options in their Edge series. Many people have complained about spotty battery life for the 705, and poor heart rate monitor performance. Another complaint is that the units can't take a beating and just stop working after awhile. I also realized I did not want nor need a full mapping function. The Edge 500 addresses these issues. It is smaller and lighter, the heart rate function works flawlessly, the batter lasts all day and charges quickly, and it is infinitely customizable. The price is right too. As a bike commuter, weekend century rider and casual triathlete, the unit has helped me up my training program with more discipline. I especially recommend the cadence monitor. It is easy to fool yourself into thinking you are pedaling a good (80-90 rpm) cadence, but the reality is most of us pedal too slowly. The unit has woken me up to the fact that I am not pedaling well, and once I started training to a specific cadence zone, the change in my riding style and speed was remarkable. But it started with serious muscle soreness and cramps, as proper pedaling activates the hamstrings a lot more, and generally distributes the work more evenly across muscle groups. That incredible soreness in the first week was followed quickly by more power and speed and stamina. yay!Read full review...

Very user friendly

I previously used a Garmin 305 for my cycling and running, but the addition of an ANT+ power meter demanded an upgrade and I'm glad I did.

The computer itself is great- tons of useful information is available to geek over after a workout. It synced instantly with my heart rate, speed/ cadence sensor, and power meter. Easy to install, use, and read. Battery life is about 7 hours.

As a triathlete previously using just the 305 I had to swim in my quick release watch band (305 isn't waterproof) then somewhere in T2 pull the computer off the bike and switch to run. Now I just grab the 305 and put it on as I run out of T2. Probably saves 5 seconds, but more importantly simplifies race day. Also of benefit is extended battery life. Ironman races take me about 10 hours on the bike and run, so it's reassuring to know I have fresh batteries when I start the marathon.

Garmin Edge 500

Very happy with this product so far. Purchased 1 month ago. I bought this to replace my previous bicycle computer. This does everything that I was looking for and alot more stuff that I don't even use. User can set-up screen displays to their preference. Quality and components seem very good. I use on both my road bike and mountain bike. If I had anything bad to say it would be that the display screen reflects sunlight making it hard to read at just the wrong angle and that it loses signals in the woods but that is to be expected when it can't get a clear signal because of the trees. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a primary cycling computer. My buddy bought the Garmin 305 which works well for triathletes so it can be used for running and swimming.Read full review...
