It is an inspirational story of the triumph of one girl's determination (with dedicated support) to rise above a squalid upbringing to educational success, and her ongoing battle on behalf of those similarly disadvantaged..
The accounts of a childhood involving parental drug and alcohol addiction and sexual abuse are often raw and harrowing to read. Katriona O'Sullivan "tells it as it was" with no punches pulled yet she retains a deep affection for the parents whose problems gave her such a terrible start to life..
I have sight problems so initially listened to the audiobook version o n Audible. This is even more powerful as it is read, with deep feeling, by the author herself. I recommend the audiobook in particular to anyone involved in trying to support deprived children, educationally or otherwise. Katriona pays heartfelt tribute to teachers whose dedication and insight helped to lift her out of her childhood surroundings. Her ongoing "crusade", as a Phd. and Lecturer means that the story continues!
