Ship Spoiled for Ha’pprth of Tar

First impressions on unpacking were favourable. The wood panels seemed nicely finished and more solid than many of the flat-packs I’ve built over the years. The main carcass went together without a hitch. Those first impressions started to wane as I set about assembling the drawers. The usual screwed metal peg and cam fixings have been replaced by an unfamiliar non-screwed plastic and metal device with a rather flimsy cam. The instructions weren’t at all helpful in working out just how they work and I succeeded in destroying the cam at my first attempt. After that no more problems, other than being a cam short. The next problem concerned fixing the drawer backs to the sides, which involved using four screws into pre-drilled pilot holes. The issue there was that the screws just dropped into the pilot hole, being too short and narrow to provide any strength, the screws just falling out. I would usually have been prepared to let that pass and buy a pack of suitable screws but during Lockdown that is not so easy. I spoke to the customer services department at the suppliers and they apologised and agreed to send a new cam and the correct screws.
Five days later they had not arrived so I managed to get some of the screws from my son and completed the drawer assembly in a matter of minutes, albeit minus one peg and cam fixing.
I then set about installing the drawer runners onto the inside of the carcass, which had gone together very well. Having secured the runners using the small pinched pilot holes as a guide I discovered that they were the seriously misaligned, being out of level and too high so the drawers were askew and too high. Having invested considerable time thus far I set about removing the runners and carefully measuring the correct positioning of the runners and re-drilling pilot holes. After a couple of false starts and about 2 hours I succeeded in getting the drawers installed acceptably, but not perfectly. The fitting of the casters was interesting as it looked as though there had been several attempts at punching the pilot holes. Not really a major problem, just another irritant. I must admit
I am quite pleased at the general appearance and function of the finished product. It is just a pity that it took me around 5 hours to assemble instead of a maximum of well under 2 hours.
Incidentally the replacement screws arrived the day after I’d finished the drawers. The screws sent were far smaller than the original ones! The replacement cam came with a good old fashioned screwed metal peg.
The drawers have been in use for about a week now and seem to be still solid (I always supplement screws with wood glue!) and look good. Just a shame that the experience was spoiled by 𝐒imple carelessness during manufacture. Without that I would probably have given a 5^ review.

Does the job, but poor quality

Bad build quality and metal parts particularly cheap in construction, however it does the job when together.

Useful storage cabinet

Good quality product for the price. Easy to assemble but a few prepared screw marks lacked precision although end result satisfactory. Good storage capacity all round.
