Fine acting in this period drama

Great to see a very young Helena Bonham Carter in full flow! She is superb in this production which, although very obviously made quite a while ago, soon engages the audience with the excellent cast and fine acting all round. We thoroughly enjoyed watching this and have kept it in our DVD collection to watch again!Read full review...

Jana Regina

Excellent cast. Sara Kestelman is outstanding as Jane’s mother. A teenage couple, forced to marry, unaware of their parent’s conspiracy to make Jane queen.
Some parts are amusing and some are very emotional.Read full review...

Lady Jane - Queen for a few Days! Innocent Traitor!

Much has been written and speculated upon regarding the life and short reign of Lady Jane Grey! Variations abound, but this DVD film is a pretty accurate account of her life, of how she was heinously beaten and subdued by her family into actions that were totally against her gentle, caring, pious nature. Such were the politics of Tudor England when noble families fought, lied, bickered and betrayed even their close loved ones for a chance of power, favour and riches via the crown and throne.
Helena Bonham Carter.. in an early sobjourn into the film industry, does stunningly well as the hapless Jane. Cary Elwes follows suit with his portrayal of Guilford (spelt GUILDFORD in some historical writings) Dudley, also a pawn in the game of religious politics and strategy, also manipulated by his father. Guilford, a drunken, frequenter of bawdy houses, despite his resentment at being forced to marry Jane (Jane having likewise feelings), soon falls under her gentle spell.. and they actually fall in love and are briefly very happy.
Meanwhile, the boy King, Edward, dying of consumption (TB) (some say he may well have been slowly poisoned) and manipulated by Guildford's father, declares Jane successor to the throne on his deathbed, which was totally contrary to his Father Henry VIII's wishes.
This leads to religious insurrection with Mary Tudor(later to be known as Bloody Mary) as the true heir as required by her father. Thus we have the inevitable struggle between Mary (Catholic) and Jane (who adhered to what was considered the new religion... ie. protestant) and Mary's loyal Catholc followers and troops speedily quell and subdue the country into accepting her as true Queen.
Mary however is loathe to order the dispatch of Guilford and Jane who now reside either in the Tower or under close house arrest.
Queen Mary, who is deeply in love with Philip of Spain... and who is required by Philip to dispose of any threats to the throne... eventually agrees to the executions of both Guilford and Dudley on the grounds of treason.
The finale, which involves Jane's appearance on the block, and her final moments of panic and the desire to do what was right, are a heart rending ending to what is only one of the tragic hsitories from our heritage. Bonham-Carter plays this end superbly.
The film abounds with familiar faces from TV and film Drama.
Some may argue that this film is treated with a little more lightness than is realistic... but this is an emminently watchable film and available new from sellers on Ebay at a more than sensible price.
If you like history, (especially Tudor) but don't have the time or inclination for reading lengthy historical tomes.. then this film will give you a pretty good idea of the story of Lady Jane Grey.... innocent traitor.
Thanks for reading!

Lady Jane

Already familiar with the film, and liking its evocation of Tudor England, I (reluctantly) bought the DVD from eBay, at her request, for a friend keen on Helena Bonham Carter's work. Reluctantly, because I knew there were scenes of cruelty to the young Lady Jane and of the sickness and death of the equally young Edward VI that my friend would find disagreeable. And sure enough, we didn't get through much of it before she wanted it switched off. The problem is, it shows a rarely filmed episode - the brief reign, under compulsion, of the young Lady Jane Grey - in which respect it merits a viewing. But my friend's comment, which has to be acknowledged, was that (director) 'Trevor Nunn is a sadist'. I've seen much worse, but the elements of child-cruelty and parental/social domination (a) probably give an accurate picture of the period, but (b) can offend.Read full review...
