Powerful with stunning photography. John Schlesinger [Director] at his best.

Made in 1967 and filmed entirely on location in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Dorset, this is Julie Christie [Bathsheba Everdene] working with the late John Schlesinger [Director] in a beautifully filmed portrayal of Thomas Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd". Always something going on in the background to Schlesinger's frames. Some of the photography is stunning. A subsequent remake of the novel , filmed in the Czech Republic I believe, pale into insignificance compared to this powerful,big budget 1967 film.
Presumably remastered from a video transfer of the celluloid, the film sometimes lack the high definition of what we are used to now a days on our televisions, but this was extremely good value for money, and will stand the test of time. I should add that I was a school boy extra in the circus scenes, so I may be biased, but you will enjoy it!Read full review...

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book at college,used it during my Higher English Exams,developed an affinity for works by Thomas Hardy,and decided to collect this DVD,having enjoyed the film/story in the past.Read full review...
