Derwent vrs. less expensive

Since I was new to the medium I started by btrying to economize when I purchased my first set of watercolor pencils. They served reasonably well but the pencils were unidentified by either number or color, although the shafts were more or less the colors of the medium. No replacement pencils were offered. They did not sharpen well, tending to break even in my KUM sharpener. They did get me started and peaked my interest enough to do the kind of necessary research I should have done before my first purchase.

The Derwent pencils were well recommended although there is one set that I really couldn't afford that I might have prefered based on their ratings. The "leads" are harder than those in my first set, holding their point longer and enabling me to apply more pressure. The black is blacker although it doesn't quite match the black of the set I would have loved to have had. The white, similarly, is the second white-est but meets the deeper white with more applications which, given that the leads are harder, does not wear down the pencil as on my first purchase. Replacement pencils are available and each pencil is both numbered and the color named. The end caps on the pencils more or less match the colors of the "leads". Amazing

These watercolor pencils are amazing! They have a smooth feel to them, and not waxy whatsoever! So they feel like just a regular colored pencil but with twice the productivity; colored pencil and watercolors! When you apply the dry pencil onto wet paper, it glides like butter and is very pigmented! My only complaint is that they do wear off a bit if you apply a lot of pressure with your brush, but that has happened rarely, and still works fine! I highly recommend these

Better than I even hoped.

Derwent delivers such great quality, the pencils are as nice as any Derwent watercolour pencils that I have purchased brand new. The color lays down nicely, and when water is added, the color remains smooth and vivid.
