brilliant

The last Palm Pilot TX is certainly the best PDA ever, unfortunately not made since 2005 since when it has been displaced by mobile phones with cameras and telephone ability. But none of these are anything like as good as the Palm for its calendar, address book, memos and much more. Mobile phones are obsolete and unsupported after only a few years. My Palm has been in use since 2000 and only replaced with an identical model when the digitizer became unreliable. Read full review...

I'm happy with my purchase.

I have had some different Palm PDA models (2x71,2x z22 and this one ) The z22 kept packing up on me and was temperamental but after the battery run down it would keep the information. Whereas the 71 would lose all stored information if the battery went flat. This one seems best of both worlds.Read full review...

Palm TX - a great PDA

This PDA will play WAV & MP3, browse the net, send emails etc. however I bought it because the screen is 50% taller and twice the resolution of the PALM III which I was using (E.G. 320x480 vs 160x160) and it's colour as well.

There is lots of S/W for it, and you can write more with compilers and interpreters available. Most of the addon S/W is very cheap, though some of it may not take full advantage of the bigger screen (a program I had bought for the Palm 3 was in this category but it cost only $7.95 to upgrade)

I find the speaker very tinny, but earphones fix that. The included music player is very basic (it dosn't even have a balance control). However a free upgrade is avialable on registration, which is better.

Exchanging contacts, notes, images etc with your PC is easy, and possible via USB, WiFi, Bluetooth and Infra red. The infra red is slow but reliable.

Make sure you have a docking (AKA hot sync) cradle this is faster than IR and allows slow charging of the battery, which you are advised to do each night - I suspect this is over cautious.

The battery is rechargable, but described as not user replaceable, and as a LiPo it will need replacing eventually. However there are plenty of instructions of how to change the battery, and offers of replacements on the net.

The SD Card slot is said to be limited to 2Gb, but thats a lot of data or Music.

I haven't used the email, SMS or bluetooth yet. My use of the browser has been very limited it seems responsive (over WiFi), but how well it would cope with JAVA or flash as used by many modern sites it unclear.

In short a great upgrade if you own an earlier model of palm.

Palm T|X PDA

The Palm Tungsten T|X has built-in Bluetooth snd radios. It has a slate format, with a 320 x 480 display, and a soft input area. When required, the input area occupies the bottom third of the screen, but when not in use it can drop down, allowing the current application to use the entire screen.

The T|X is one of the most powerful Palm PDAs, with a 312MHz XScale processor and 128MB of flash ROM. Unlike most earlier models, it stores its data in flash memory, using the NVFS file system. In terms of build quality, it is a nice solid device, with a thin form factor.

The great things about Palm PDAs are their responsiveness, ease of use and long battery life, especially when compared to Windows Mobile devices. The downside is that it is a dead system. No new devices are being made, and no new software is being written. Having said that, there is an awful lot of software out there, a lot of which is free, and the Windows Mobile scene is not particularly vibrant either.

Why don't they make these anymore??

Having been an avid Palm Pilot user since 1996 (yes really), I was very pleased to find a pristine unused TX for sale. Yes I have a Palm Pre phone and I use that for Calendar and Contacts, but I still need my handheld to keep using the bits of software that Palm did not rewrite for use with their new Palm web operating system (such as 15 years worth of shopping lists). Someday I will find the time to put all of it into my Pre bit by bit, but for now the Palm TX is a fantastic piece of kit -- this is my third one -- and the only negative I can say about it is that it's not a phone! Seriously, the screen scratches very easily and now Palm does not support Windows 7 for replication with your PC, so I guess I'm going to have to resurect an old Windows XP laptop just to replicate with this Palm TX... This is the top of the range that Palm ever made, and if you can find an unused one for heaven's sake snap it up (but only if you're not using Windows 7).Read full review...
