Compelling Novel about Coal Mining in 19th Century France

This book is a novel written around the French coal mining industry. I was recommended to it because of my mining background. The atmosphere of the pit head and underground are well portrayed and the impoverished lives of the town residents are described in hard hitting detail. It's a compelling read.
