Stranger Things....
The first of Chatwin's books but oddly the last to be read by me. Often said to be the book that re-defined or re-invigorated the art of travel writing. The skeleton of Chatwin's future style - much evident in say the Songlines - is there. The travel being merely a framework on which to hang any number of intriguing stories ranging from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to the self-proclaimed King of Patagonia.
However, now that we know that Chatwin was not averse to embroidering the truth or indeed simply making stuff up - then it is difficult to see how this can be regarded as "Travel Writing" as such or simply Chatwin's own modern peculiar hybrid of "travtion" or "fictrel" perhaps?
Having said that, the book was never less than both entertaining and educational. And together with the photographs (not brilliant in this edition), vivid descriptions of the territory I did feel that I got a sense of the place and the many characters involved in its formation and history.
But how much of it is true? And does it matter over much?Read full review

Travel Classic
In Patagonia is a long established of travel writing that, with one of two caveats, lives up to its reputation. The first caveat is that I found a period early on in the book that dragged and the second is that I couldn't help feeling that on occasions the "truth" of the book is embellished with a good helping of fiction.
Bruce Chatwin is more storyteller than reporter; In Patagonia is none the worse for that and I thoroughly enjoyed what was on offer.Read full review

Nice book
The book that 'made' Chatwin in an attractive and inexpensive edition. Good value for money and a trip down 'Amnesia Lane' for me.

Still the best
Chatwin's classic. There are plenty of reviews on this. The Vintage series are always a real treat and a bargain. There are no gimmicks and no purple prose. Along with Eric Newby, Paul Theroux and Patrick Leigh Fermor, Chatwin is a 'must read'. This is travel writing at its absolute best.Read full review
