Graham Greene writes with perfect understanding and skill of the mind-set of all the characters: Pinkie Brown, the seventeen-year-old gang leader; Ida the heroine seeking justice; Rose, the young girl besotted with Pinkie ... Everything is engrossing in this mid-20th century tale of Brighton as it once was.
