Amazing Sound

They sound like brand new headphones despite the fact that they're second hand, and they're also the best headphones I've ever used. The sound settings are so customisable and I love the clear bass setting. I've cranked that up and edited the EQ to my liking and music has seriously never sounded so good and so crisp to me, especially once I enabled the LDAC codec. It's like a whole new dimension of sound. They make my old Beats Studio 3 headphones sound terrible honestly. I also love the ambient sound feature and how clearly and loudly you can hear outside noises from long distances away. Makes walking in nature a really vivid experience. I love these headphones!Read full review...

I would buy a easier to set set.

Difficult and confusing to operate and setup. The instructions are very basic similar to an Ikea instruction manual. I wish I had bought easier to set up set of headphones. The sound quality and comfort levels are excellent..

Possibly the best noise cancelling headphones for the price

Great product. Solid upgrade over my previous MDR-1000Xs. They're comfortable, lightweight, with USB-C to fast charge the large battery. Sound quality and noise cancelling are great, as expected from this line.

A whole host of smart features are available, both on device and through the companion app. Pausing music when taking off the headphones and playing when they're back on is a nice feature. There's functionality in the app to play with the EQ, level of noise cancelling, connection to 2 devices simultaneously, and so on.

Overall a solid pair of headphones, excellent for travelling and just listening to music. Though not recommended for workouts since it doesn't sport any official water resistance, and isn't really designed to be thrown around and abused as they would be when exercising

The Best Headphones hands down.

I first came across Sony headphones when I purchased the first in the line of their signature Noise Cancellation headphones around seven years ago, when I bought the MDR1000X.

So, when purchasing another pair I had to find the best contemporary pair. After researching for a couple of weeks, I made my decision to purchase the XM4, and I have absolutely no regrets.

The noise cancellation is par excellence. And, compared to the remote hand gesture controls on the first model, the XM4 is so simple and easy to use. I do have one issue, I enjoy singing with the music, so can't really put the chat controls on.

Also, the headphone ear pads are so so so soft. Which is great when using them, but makes me anxious when handling them or putting them down anywhere, especially with three kids and a cat on the prowl all the time. Furthermore, the biggest issue with earlier models is the fragility of the headband and especially the weakest link where the headphones connect to the headband, and rotate. Mine broke on my older set, and the cost of repair was really too high. So, that put me off from getting another pair for a few years. Until now. I wasn't aware of the issue before it happened, but I am now. So, with due attention, it shouldn't happen again... Hopefully...!!!

Let's see how these faire....

Aside from these, they are great.

Fantastic headphones, highly recommended!

First off, I have to admit I was lucky enough to get these for around £150 less than the original Sony asking price,, which I would have found challenging to justify to the family. However, they are exceptionally good and no question worth what I paid for them. The noise cancelling feature is top notch, anything you play using these is going to sound great. This is my experience having used them for around a fortnight now. I usually use the "Bright" setting, (with the Bass turned slightly down) accessible in the Sony Headphones app, a feature rich piece of software, acquired from the Play Store. I've had no issues with connection whatsoever, and all the functions work accordingly. I've turned off the "Speak to Chat" option, as it doesn't suit me, but that's a personal preference. There are comparable headphones out there from Bose or Apple, Bose are certainly a very good option, but I prefer the Sony for sound, aesthetics and build, however the Apple ones cost nearly £300 more than these and come with a sorry excuse for a carrying case and you have to buy a separate cable for wired listening, and Sony provide one, and a decent hard shell carrying case, with Apple it doesn't come with the headphones. For the price that's shameful. They sound Great, but not enough to pay that much more along with those limitations, that's just this reviewers opinion. The WH 1000 xm4 sound great listening to your music, movies, audio books, or from what I've been told phone calls, I was indoors at the time, as I use the Wf-1000xm3 when I'm out and about. As far as I'm concerned, if you can afford the XM4's and like the Sony sound, now improved even to the XM3's, it's a no brainer, get them, you can't go wrong, and I absolutely Recommend them. Excellent headphones overall - but not perfect.

Excellent headphones overall. Better than Bose 700, or B&W PX7 imo. But none of them are 100% perfect for me.

The good:

1) Incredible sound quality. Music sounds extremely clear. Bass could be punchier but this doesn't bother me.

2) Very comfortable to wear for long periods - do get a little sweaty tho.

3) App is loaded with features. EQ is fully customisable.

4) Noise cancelling is very, very good.

5) £275 is a great price for these headphones.

The bad:

1) There are latency issues with these headphones. Sometimes on VLC I have to correct to -500ms. These would not be great for gaming, but then very few BT headphones are.

2) Sometimes when 2 devices are connected, you have to disconnect the other one to get sound to come out these headphones which is a little annoying.

3) Sound quality during telephony is not amazing. I don't use them to make phone calls anyway. I have my trusty Airpods 2nd gen for that.

4) They look a bit cheap. However, they've grown on me over time.

5) £350 is too much for these headphones.

Just the best there are in this category!

I have tried numerous headphone brand brands before buying these. Before making a decision one should consider what you are looking for. Corded headphones will always be capable of producing significantly better results (When matched with similar quality sources) than cordless. It’s simple physics and electronics! That being said good quality cordless will generally headphones will generally give results which are generally beyond humans audible perception so this is where the other points come to the fore. Convenience, portability, comfort and affordability. I believe, across the board, the XM4 is the best across the board under £1000. Even better than the XM5 as these fold and are easy to carry. The Apple sound very marginally better but they are huge and battery life can be limited as they cannot be turned off unleaded in their case which looks like a handbag! The are huge! I could talk about B&W and B&O but I don’t think they are better and have their own issues which can be read in many reviews. Also they are double the price. Then there are variations in broadcast material. Buy the XM4 and you’ll never be disappointed. Try a side by side test and I’m sure you’ll agree. They are truly brilliant and play with the equaliser you’ll achieve just the sound you’re looking for!Read full review...

Sony xm4

I have been missing out all these years on superior sound quality. Wow - these are incredible. They will totally transform your experience when listening to any music/watching film. Amazing bit of kit -worth every penny. Wish i had bought them sooner instead of the junk overpriced airpods and beats x - where the battery died after a year and now £250 needs to go in the bin - when i could have just bought these in the first place. Have checked and every component in these headphones can be removed and replaced - so can keep them running forever - unlike this non repairable overpriced junk companies like apple are pushing. Quality Headphones

I bought these to replace an existing pair of wireless headphones which I got fed up having to charge every night. These I charge once a week and the sound quality is excellent. I can distinguish what people are saying, something not always possible on my previous headphones.
I find them comfortable and like the feature where, at a press of a button, a voice informs you of battery charge remaining.
As for the noise cancelling feature, I can't honestly comment on as I only use them for watching TV and there's not of a lot of ambient noise but I have no reason to doubt all the good reviews there are about this feature.
Very happy with the product.

Industry Leading

Excellent sound quality. Nice design. There are a multitude of settings to customise how you listen to music and base it off your surroundings. There's features I haven't explored yet like Ear Analysis. Built-in Google/Alexa assistants. I highly recommend these headphones. Even better if you have access to 360 spatial sound which these headphones support.Read full review...

Should you switch from XM3?

Is it worth switching from XM3 to XM4? Answers below.

Sound: Let's face it, this is the first focus. There are subtle differences and from a personal perspective XM4 is better. The clarity difference is an improvement. The staging is better and whilst I have read reviews about a loss of bass, the app corrects this when you fiddle with the settings. To me XM4 also feel louder which is a big plus.

Features: Speak to chat isn't for me. The dual connection is flawless, seamlessly switching between movie on tablet and music on phone when hopping on and off the tube is awesome. Also love the remove headphone/auto music off feature. Everything else is the same.

Design: The headband has less cushion and it makes the band look rounder on the head. I prefer this as my head is bald and XM3 made my silhouette look egg shaped. The black is more matte and looks more premium than XM3. You'd have to look really close to tell the difference.

Call quality: Picks up voice better but background noise is awful for those receiving the call, same as XM3. Call quality good when in a quiet environment.

Overall: Yes definitely worth upgrade, you hear the difference and feel it with additional features. Great headphones.
