One of the most perfect gems of the true Survival Horror golden era

Many years after the last appearance of the Alone in the Dark (AitD) franchise, this game made a comeback in a time where the survival horror genre was getting much attention thanks to now-classic series like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, trying to milk a cow it helped create years before. And because of those titles, this game somehow became an underappreciated and really overlooked gem with some real unique features no other game, past or present, could present players with.

One can argue this game wasn't innovative in 2001 with its pre-rendered Resident Evil-like backgrounds, and we can say that titles like Silent Hill could immerse you in a psichological thrilling gameplay that no other game can ever dream of. But this game had one of the best lightning implementations on a game engine the world has ever seen, and it's a shame it was never really used like this after AitD4 was released. It added a sense of "darkness" like no other game before, and made exploration of the rooms a whole new experience.

A classic survival horror in its core, we have 2 characters to choose, and their stories and gameplay will be totally different, sometimes crossing over on certain times and locations. The game have an excellent ambient soundtrack and really beautiful scenarios, and the already mentioned lightning technique made them all the more immersive and eerie, creating a really good atmosphere that will carry you along the game in an excellent experience for the fans of the best generation of Survival Horror titles, before they became action packed and lost all focus in atmosphere and exploration like in the PSOne golden era.

All in all, a trademark on the survival horror genre, where the Playstation 2 version has some improvements over other ports (graphically superior to the PSone, and because a Dual Shock is the perfect way to really enjoy the unique gameplay I cannot recommend the PC/DC ports over this one).
