IMO Segal's best
This brace of Segal flicks is among the best AMERIKAN productions he made prior to his fall from vitriolic Hollywood, after his unwelcome activism against TPTB of BIG OIL and BIG GOVERNMENT, et al.
In my personal litany of things worthwhile my view of Steven Segal is that IN HIS REAL LIFE he has always been a man of genuine courage and integrity and therefore is worthy of the respect shown him by purchasing this quad of his early-career movies.
After departure from the US, Segal's life took a new, hard turn via the East European film venue, so that his character portrayals have (IMO) become unique among all other productions in that they at once depict genuine courage coupled with the killing instinct of a cold sociopath.
There are, (again, IMO) people who deserve killing, so that in the viewers' eyes Segal incites a unique satisfaction for this visceral human proclivity in concert with morbid fascination and dark desire.
His use of short swords is especially poignant as he is the only actor today who in fight scenes with knives and swords enters the blade into the space between the opponent's shoulder-blade and spine, pressing the heft down with all his substantial weight so that cold steel enters into the heart.
. . . A truly graphic depiction of what is by all standards brutally administered death, candy-coated by numerous VERY pretty young girls in their birthday suits.
Segal is a trip down reality lane. . . a lane most of us would wish to avoid unless we can visit from a safe distance.
You should get the 4 FILM FAVORITES, a more milquetoast version of his present-day persona while you still can. It adds a satisfying contrast against Segal's more recent work, to which there is no idiom of comparison.
