Adam Sandler Gives Us Another Great One

We are beginning to witness the maturing of the funniest comedic actor in a long time. Not to say he is not funny anymore by any means! Sandler is just growing up from his outrageously funny comedy sensations like "Happy Gilmore and "Billy Madison" and is now becoming a more diverse man. Coming off a very serious "Punch Drunk Love", he has grown; as a man and actor. "50 First Dates" has all the fun and laughs of his hilarious films and casts of characters who appear in seemingly all his films in one way or another, but Barrymore brings a love interest and additional hilarious side. This movie has a great combination of laughs and love. A great "date-movie". Sandler is laying the foundations to expand his talent and reveal a softer side and gentler side than his Clown-Smashing, Golf Club Tossing antics that made me laugh so hard I cried. But now his comedy and sincerity together make me laugh and cry. Nice to see such a talented man entertain so well. Great Film. SEE THIS ONE !!!!Read full review...

50 First Dates

I am pleasantly suprised to say that I really enjoyed this movie- it manages to be light hearted and funny, romantic and has a little depth to it at the same time. Adam Sandler plays a man who shys away from commitment in relationships and has a long history of one night stands with the many different women who are vacationing on the resort island he lives on. Drew Barrymore plays a woman named, Lucy, an island resident, who due to a car accident has no long term memory. Her memory capacity is only about 24 hours. Although this type of memory condition may sound a little far fetched it actually DOES exist and is portrayed quite realisticly in the plot of this movie- which I think makes the plot more interesting- this REALLY COULD AND DOES HAPPEN. When Sandler meets Lucy he doesn't know about her condition at first and he actually falls in love with her fun and outgoing personality. But because of her condition Lucy can only remember him for 24 hours. This turns into Sandler trying day after day to make Lucy fall in love with him all over again so he can spend time with her, while at the same time trying deal with her very protective family- who do not want to see her hurt by Sandler in any way. Going into this movie I was worried that it might follow the same type of plotline as the movie Groundhog Day- that it would portray the same mundane day over and over and over again-- you know, it was okay to watch for a while, but then gets VERY VERY OLD. Pleasantly that just isn't the case with this movie and the plot manages to progress and move forward.Read full review...

Cute, a fit formulaic, but enjoyable

I don't typically like Adam Sandler. I find that he's just one of the many talentless white men that somehow have a hold on comedy. But I do like Drew Barrymore, even though she just acts like Drew Barrymore in everything she does.
This movie was very cute. It had genuine moments of hilarity, and I found myself enjoying the characters presented.
Although the premise was original, the plot was somewhat predictable. And also, how would someone afflicted with the condition Drew's character had ever be able to overcome it in a few hours every day, and then go happy-go-lucky into the successive hours and not be absolutely miserable knowing that they won't remember a thing? This requires a bit of suspension of belief on the viewers part.
But, after buying into the fantasy that the movie created, I was able to sit back and enjoy this sweet movie about, you guessed it, finding love in the most unpredictable of places (imagine that!), and that your true love can make you fall in love with them day after day. Blah blah blah...

50 First Dates 4 Stars Movie

Starting Adam Sandler with Drew Barrymore, his co-star from The Wedding Singer, as well as Peter Segal, his director on Anger Management. Fifty First Dates finds the funnyman playing veterinarian Henry Roth. More than content with a life of one-night-stands, Henry decides to give up his noncommittal lifestyle when he meets and falls for Lucy (Barrymore). However, when he discovers that Lucy has no short term memory, Henry finds himself having to win her heart again with every new day.Read full review...

Great "Feel Good" movie

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are reunited in this cute "Feel Good" movie set in Hawaii. The chance meeting between Sandler and Barrymore occurs in a quant island restaurant. Barrymore, who lost her memory in a car accident, (not violent), is reliving the last day before the accident over and over in her daily routine much like "groundhogs day." Her father does all he can to keep his daughter's memory of the accident away from her by going out of his way to keep her happy. The entire supporting cast carries the movie with the exception of Rob Schneider who feels that perverted "sophomoric" humor is needed to carry the day. Without his brief appearances I would have rate the movie excellent since it is the kind of harmless classic you can watch over and over.

Excellent Title

I love this movie - it is a wonderful and fun-loving love story. It proves that anyone truly in love will go through anything to keep the one they love. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the object of his love, played their roles excellently (I will refer to them by their real names). Before Adam met Drew, he was a playboy and not serious with any woman; however, that all changed when he met and fell in love with Drew. She was no ordinary girl, she had short term memory only - memory that lasted only one day til she fell asleep. When she awakened, she was stuck with the memory of the day before her accident, even though days, weeks, months and years had passed; her long term memory was totally lost, all due to an auto accident she suffered a few years before. She was trapped with not remembering anything about her car accident or anything after that. With trickery (with good motive - love), Adam gets Drew to fall in love with him everyday. Can you imagine each day of love being like the first? He also finally overcomes her father's opposition to his advances and persuades her father, her brother, and all of her friends to realize that he is good for her, and that she is happy when with him. Later, the two become married and have a child. It is wonderful how Adam concocks a way for her to remember him each day after their marriage and to remember their child. I will not tell you how. From the beginning - day one of the movie - and throughout the lovers experiences together - to the end of the movie, the movie is lighthearted, deeply romantic and has just the kind of happy ending you want to see (or is it the beginning? smile) I would not change anything about this movie - it is funny, lively and the perfect love story.Read full review...

50 First Dates (2004, DVD)

Is there any way I could just forget this movie?

I'm a fan of Adam Sandler. Am I a huge fan? No. But I do like his humor and I've been a fan of most of his movies. Mostly, I just like it when he flies off the handle and screams. It's funny to me in a very baseless, kindergarten way. But at least I like it.

Drew Barrymore on the other hand...well, I haven't liked her in a movie since the last one she did with Sandler. Which might be why they decided to team up again.

Sandler (I forget his name in the movie) is a guy that likes to love `em and leave `em. He meets the tourists, bangs them, gives them some hokey lie about who he is - and he's on to the next one. And this seems to be working for him. He's got some weird friends and an odd job as a marine mammal veterinarian (is there such a thing?) - but he seems happy. Hey, he's living in Hawaii. Who wouldn't be happy?

But all of that seems to change, strangely, when he meets Drew Barrymore in a coffee shop and endearingly helps her make a waffle hut. They hit it off - sparks fly - and our boy is changed forever. Or so he thinks.

When he goes back to the coffee shop the next day to continue where they left off - she doesn't remember him and blows him off. Why? Well, Drew has some sort of mental "condition" where she's lost all short term memory and lives the same day over and over again (Bill Murray would be proud). Sandler, vexed by this woman he is falling for, decides to do his best to get her to notice him all over again and again and again.

While the premise has a bit of promise, the comedy is sorely lacking. There are but a few jokes in the whole thing. Sandler and Barrymore's romance is very cookie cutter for a somewhat original premise. And the worst thing is that Sandler's character learns his "womanizing lesson" about a third of the way through the film - which isn't really a good idea - since every movie is a journey of discovery for it's main characters. Once the journey ends - the movie usually does too. But not here. It just keeps going and going. And while you may have hope that Barrymore's clueless character might learn something - she never does.

The real stinker here is the ending that is so inexplicable, I nearly laughed out loud - but not in a good way.

There are a few bright spots in the movie, however. Rob Schneider is very funny as the perverted, clueless, henpecked surfer with too many kids. Sean Astin also has a nice turn as the roided up idiot brother of Barrymore. Actually, it's just good to see him no longer a fat hobbit. I was starting to ask, "Who ate the kid from The Goonies?" The scenery is beautiful and the soundtrack is nifty, with modern artists covering 80's hits.

The DVD boasts commentary from Barrymore and the director, some trailers, deleted scenes with optional commentary, a "making of", some music videos from the soundtrack, a gag reel, a Talkin' Pidgin featurette, and the Comedy Central special. Not bad. Buy it if you just love Sandler or Barrymore. Rent it if your just interested.

Really funny romantic comedy

50 First Dates is a Really funny romantic comedy

I wasn't that pumped to watch this movie but when I did I really enjoyed it. Sandler and Barrymoore have great on screen chemistry and the movie itself is really well scripted and features a great supporting cast.

I'm not a huge Sandler fan but this was one of my favorite Sandler films.

Final Verdict:

4/5

Rent or Buy?: Romantic comedy fans and Sandler fans must buy.

funny but also serious

i thought i would be watching a comedy, yes the movie is full of jokes but only in the begining .... the middle and end is all serious ....
the movie is different and i liked that .... i guess my expectations were higher ..... also was buggs me is the movie skips and leaves you wondering things like how she might have kids etc .... yeah like everyone else says she has an accident were she cannot retain any new memory and at first sandlers character (who prior was taking advantage of tourists and making them one night stands) takes it as a joke/challenge to keep making her fall for him everyday but then he takes it seriously that he wants to marry her.
i also wonder what happens when she no longer has family like her dad to confirm for her that she did infact have an accident.
the movie is somewhat sweet but i have to stop watching oprahs reviews and she makes me expect too much of a movie.

50 First Dates - A tribute to Love

I'm not a fan of Adam Sandler or Drew Barrymore but the combination works here. This is great love story with a unique twist that goes well beyond amnesia. This has become one of the favorites that I watch with my wife. It is creative, humorous and takes you on a journey that shows you what you can do when you are motivated by true love. This movie gives us evidence that Love at First Sight can and does still exist.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it.
